Wolverine and the X-Men kicks into the final leg of its first season with "Shades of the Grey," a fast-paced installment that pushes many of the show's plot threads towards a long awaited climax. Apparently, the series is for now finished spinning its wheels on random subplots and tangents unrelated to its main story arcs. In other words, this is more like it.
"Shades of Grey" begins as Jean Grey awakens in an upstate New York hospital. Unable to remember her name or any details about her past, a frustrated Jean inadvertently triggers a telekinetic attack that renders everyone within a certain radius unconscious. This alerts her presence to the MRD, The X-Men and Mr. Sinister and kicks off a race between the three factions to bring Jean into custody and secure one of the most powerful mutants in the universe.
A good chunk of the episode details Emma Frost and Cyclops' battle with Archangel, with the confused Jean caught in the middle as her Phoenix powers threaten to explode yet again. It's always a treat to see Emma and Scott on screen together, but sadly their dysfunctional relationship again takes a backseat to action. Still, adding Jean to the picture adds some unspoken tension to the Emma/Scott dynamic, and the action is all handled in an exciting, rollicking manner.
