Psych returns to USA Network for its 4th season premiere this Friday at 10PM.
SideReel had a chance to check out the premiere episode, Extradition: British Columbia, and we think that both die-hards and casual Psych fans will be happy with what they're getting.
No big spoilers, but in a nutshell, the season premiere of Psych finds Shawn and Gus seemingly on a Canadian ski vacation, only to spot Pierre Despereaux (played by none other than Cary Elwes of Princess Bride fame, though he's a little older now than you may remember him...), an art thief whom Lassiter has been trying to hunt down for years. A cat and mouse game ensues - with Shawn and Gus encountering Desperaux multiple times - and Desperaux deriving great enjoyment out of Shawn's inability to catch him. There's a fun twist at the end - which we won't spoil - but see if you can spot it coming...
So a confession: I am not a regular watcher of Psych. For me, the show's a light, entertaining romp, but it just has never managed to make it into my list of shows that are must-see. However, I think this is one of the best parts about Psych; the episodes are pretty much self-contained, so if you only want to tune in from time to time, you won't be lost, and you'll definitely be entertained.
Most enjoyable: the chemistry between Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill) is undeniable. It's a blast to watch the 2 banter; you can just tell that they're having a great time making the show, which makes it even more fun to watch. The show is also loaded up with a bunch of fun pop cultural references; be on the lookout for a hilarious jab at The Mentalist...and another at Remington Steele.
My only criticism of the show - and this may just be personal preference - is that sometimes it's on the cusp of too goofy for my tastes. I honestly have a hard time believing that anybody would ever buy Shawn's psychic "episodes" at all...and every so often Shawn's cavalier attitude towards...life...I find to be a little bit too unrealistic. But, I recognize that to others this is all a part of the show's charm, and no matter what, Psych definitely does have that.
