Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled that Gossip Girl has finally returned to our TV screens, but if we are being completely honest, I was a little underwhelmed with last night's episode, "The Age of Dissonance".
The episode had some funny moments: the play which devolved into the characters airing their grievances with one another on stage, which the NY Times critic hilariously thought was intentional and "genius" was a clever idea.
But...many of the individual story lines left me disappointed. Major concerns:
1. Jenny, Nate and Vanessa = Useless - Is it me, or has GG kind of hit an impasse regarding what to do with these 3? Tonight, Jenny sewed some costumes and inadvertently ratted out Dan. Vanessa filmed a documentary (because she's never done that before...) and Blair briefly lashes out at her for all that is wrong in the world. Lastly, Nate's relationship with Vanessa is briefly threatened (hint: it's because they have no chemistry!) - for the 3000th time.
Since the conclusion of Jenny's wild fashion designing days/return to school and the resolution of Nate's financial woes/hookup with Vanessa, these characters have been without purpose and stagnant. They need something new and exciting...and they need it now!
2. Why so speedy with Dan and Rachel Carr? - I really felt like Gossip Girl blazed through this story line for no good reason. There was so much more they could have done with it before ending it! I was kind of looking forward to a few episodes of a hidden student/teacher love affair, but instead, over the course of an episode, Dan is in love, then pulls a 180, decides Rachel is evil (and really...was she?) and Rachel leaves. Kind of rushed, don't you think?
3. Chuck's at his best when he's bantering with Blair or bro-mancing with Nate - I was less drawn to Chuck Bass this evening than I usually am...and I think it's because I wasn't really feeling the independent story line. Furthermore, the resolution of the secret society arc seemed kind of uninspired. Elle using Chuck for money (and nothing more) seemed quite predictable.
4. Blair and Serena -I swear, Blair and Serena's friendship is bipolar. Last time we saw them, B and S were 2 buddy buddy peas in a pod, but then this week they hate each other again. I can't keep track. And it drives me crazy.
So...am I alone here or were some of you too disappointed with this week's GG return?
