Taking a television series to an exotic location used to be the kind of thing you would save for season four or five, when the show might be in a rut and need something new and different to get the spark back. It's not something you would expect from a brand new series like Modern Family. But when a series is as well-written and acted as ABC's Wednesday night hit, you can pretty much do anything with it. So it was off to "Hawaii," full of sun, surf and lots of laughs... just not quite as many laughs as last week's episode.
"Airport 2010" was a hilarious set up for this family vacation. Unfortunately, though, it went too far in establishing that Gloria had all these big plans for the extended family. So when "Hawaii" started off focusing on poolside lounging for most and separate adventures for Mitchell and Cameron, I was thrown a bit. This was not what Gloria was telling us to expect. It was a small hump to get over, but it was a bit frustrating at first to have these two episodes feel so disconnected. But hey, "Hawaii" was not billed as a "Part 2," so it's not like continuity was blown or anything that extreme.
