Gary's been walking a tightrope for the last few episodes and with Wynn Duffy hitting the scene in last week's episode, Justified expanded on it.
In "Hatless," we start off with an impotent bar fight between Raylan and two bar customers because they were loud and he didn't like that. They beat him up and took his hat. Later, Raylan became the sensible one (see: sober) when he got between Duffy and Gary to reach a reasonable solution.
Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) has that sense of being smart and not being smart at the same time. He helps other people, but feels the need to bring upon himself things that he shouldn't and that ... well, that's Raylan in a nutshell, isn't it? It came through in the juxtaposition of these two events. Raylan mentioned he wasn't going for the easy way out when he returned to the bar. Heck, he couldn't even get through the two-minute conversation without insulting the man's head size. One of the bar guys even said "we were just trying to have fun, you were the one out of line" and Raylan agrees. But, and this is going to sound weird, he seems to pride himself on being able to keep others out of harms way through his actions. Raylan may need to visit a therapist.
I'm curious, does that hat really mean nothing to Raylan? He said in a previous episode he just bought it and liked the way it looked on him, but why is he so protective of it? I'm sure we'll find out more about that later.
