Batman: The Brave and the Bold Season 1, Episode 24: "Inside the Outsiders" - Review

Although Batman: The Brave and the Bold's erratic airing schedule has been frustrating at times, I think taking a week off after the brilliant "Mayhem of the Music Meister" was a wise first step in giving its latest episode, "Inside the Outsiders," a chance to live up to that tremendous musical extravaganza. The second wise step was setting the episode's action in a dream world dominated by the psychic villain Psycho Pirate, which promised to deliver a lot of the imaginative fun fans have come to expect from this series.

Unfortunately, like so many of this series' episodes, the main story featured in "Inside the Outsiders" doesn't quite live up to the strength of its cold opening. This week's involves Batman and Catwoman flirting even as the femme fatale gets ready to feed Bats and Green Arrow to giant pet cats. This segment put a smile on my face for a number of reasons, chief among them being a couple pun-tastic lines such as Batman telling Catwoman, "You're the one who's caught, Catwoman in the crooked claws of crime!"

The episode's main plotline kicked off on an angst-ridden note that had me a little worried about the direction of the story. Pyscho Pirate has captured The Outsiders and set about feeding on their torment with the help of one of his dastardly machines. This causes Batman to venture into the dream world to save Katana, Black Lightning and Metamorpho from their own nightmares. First up is Katana, who re-experiences the death of her master at the hands of her sworn enemy. Despite some nice action and a few well staged shots (the death of Katana's master in particular was delivered in a provocative and creative manner), this scene had me a tad concerned; this show works best when it dials up the silliness, and this story seemed a little too morose for my tastes.
