Move over Dr. House, there's another doctor in the, well, house.
Fox's new medical drama Mental about unorthodox psychiatrist Dr. Jack (Chris Vance) is set to premiere tonight, and it is seen to either satiate fans of shows like House, which recently ended their seasons, or force comparisons between the two doctors. After all, both are seen as rather unconventional and irreverent, with Jack seen in one promo stripping down to his skivvies in an encounter with a particularly jumpy patient.
On Mental, Dr. Jack becomes Director of Mental Health Services at Wharton Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, where he takes on patients who are battling unknown, misunderstood, and often misdiagnosed conditions. In another promo, the doctor is pleading in a board meeting to democratize the proceedings and let patients join the meeting.
Jack Gallagher has developed a mysterious ability to get into the brains of his patients and see the way they see the reality, which allows him to uncover what might be the key to their long-term recovery. As such, he performs strange treatments for his patients and may break some rules. This leads to serious conflicts with his boss Nora (Annabella Sciorra) - his own Cuddy? - who also happens to be his ex. He also has to deal with ambitious and sexy rival Veronica (Jacqueline McKenzie) and attending Carl (Derek Webster), who hides a deep hate for him. Completing the cast are junior resident Arturo (Nicholas Gonzalez) and young doctor Chloe (Marisa Ramirez)
On the pilot episode, Jack arrives and immediately has to deal with a patient who is suffering hallucinations. The staff are totally skeptical of his unorthodox methods, which should set the tone for the remainder of the season.
Catch the premiere of Mental tonight 9pm on Fox.
