The show picked up right where things left off (except Shane looker a little older, Isabelle looked a little thinner, Celia looked a little fatter and Silas looked a lot hotter...I'm not kidding). However, things concluded at the end of last season setting up the show for some very big changes.
After burning down her house (that the fire was probably going to get anyway, but it still seemed rather irresponsible, bordering on crazy behavior by Nancy), Nancy and her family go on the run, ending up in the border town of Ren Mar. This is also where Bubby - the great grandmother of Nancy's children lives - as well as her father-in-law, Andy's father (played by Albert Brooks).
Back in whatever remains of Agrestic/Magestic, Celia has been framed for all of Nancy and crew's doings, and she hilariously tries to explain what has really happened to the police (she's currently in jail) as the rest of the crew simultaneously insist in a united front that Celia is entirely to blame.
These two plot points are pretty much the premiere's main ones, along with the setup of Nancy collaborating with Guillermo to help smuggle drugs across the Mexican border into California.
-I hope you enjoyed the theme song, as this episode marked the last episode that it will be utilized in (and even in this episode the opening footage was completely altered to reflect a burning Agrestic). I know that the creator is doing this to emphasize the changes that have taken place in the series, but I kind of feel like it is removing a small piece of the show's soul (not to be over dramatic or anything).
-I am already missing Conrad (Romany Malco) and Heylia (Tonye Patano), who are also gone.
-One of the funnier moments of last night's episode came from Nancy's discussion about the next door neighbor Rad. "Rad is ten and he's read the whole Narnia series and now he's moved onto His Dark Materials and he likes it so far."
-I don't think I was a 30 Rock fan yet the last time I was watching Weeds so I was happy to recognize Maulik Pancholy - Sanjay on Weeds - as Jonathon on 30 Rock. This guy is pretty much a scene stealer in both. I loved the line: "Oh god. I'm going to go to jail and I'm going to get raped and it's going to make me hate being gay."
-While the whole montage of the Agrestic crew framing Celia to the police was amusing, it sort of gave their characters a whole new dimension of cruelness - knowingly and maliciously framing a former wife/friend.
-Albert Brooks is also pretty hilarious as Len(ny), Andy's father, calling Nancy "Not Francie" and making repeated jokes about Nancy's not being Jewish. Best line: "You're sitting in my mother's living room eating German food and smelling like gas. She was in Aushwitz. What kind of a monster are you?"
-Anybody beginning to sense the start of a romantic relationship between Nancy and Andy or is that entirely me?
-I hope that the show finds a way to bring Nancy back together with the supporting characters, because while the split time in Agrestic/Ren Mar was alright for the premiere, I would really miss her interaction with all of them if they were to remain apart. It would also make the other characters seem far less relevant, as all they are left doing is covering up for Nancy back in Agrestic.
