Almost exactly ten years after 10 Things I Hate About You (TV) was released, ABC Family is set to premiere the television adaptation of the romcom that became the breakout vehicle of Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger. 10 Things I Hate About You will debut tonight at 8pm.
As with the movie, on the pilot we meet sisters who are dual opposites - Kat (Lindsey Shaw), who is adamant to not fit in, and Bianca (Meaghan Jette Martin), who is determined to be the most popular girl in their new school. They have clear goals set up, until one day the steadfast Kat meets the similarly intense outcast Patrick (Ethan Peck), and sparks begin to fly. Pat's character, of course, was played by Ledger, while Kat's, by Stiles.
For his part, Carter Covington, the executive producer and showrunner of ABC Family's new series, realizes that not all television series based on movies are received well. Hence, his goal is not to recreate the movie.
"We're coming at it really as a re-imagining of the movie as a TV show and with a lot of respect and love for the original movie," he tells IGN. "I don't want to try to have the actors mimic these performances that everyone loves. I really want the characters to sort of look differently in the show. The DNA of them is the same but they're played by new actors, they have new spins on them that are slightly different."
That being said, however, Covington admits that he was a big fan of 10 Things I Hate About You when it came out in 1999. Its director Gil Junger has in fact returned to direct the pilot of the 10 Things the television series in addition to several episodes.
