Archer: "Training Day" Review Episode 2

Fans of such Adult Swim series as Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo can now rejoice, because the creator of those series, Adam Reed, is back with a new animated series, this time on FX. Packed with fast-paced, overlapping dialogue and a wonderfully talented voice cast, Archer is a sharp mix of crude humor and spy movie parodies.

The voice cast is absolutely excellent. I've been a longtime fan of H. Jon Benjamin (Dr. Katz, Home Movies), and his turn here as vain super spy Sterling Archer is brilliantly over-the-top, from his drunken outburst and almost-accidental stopping of a terrorist, to his education of all things spy-related ("No, Cyril, when they're dead they're just hookers!"). Chris Parnell, an actor who was underutilized on SNL but is always funny in his appearances on 30 Rock as Dr. Spaceman, plays a great straight man to the overwhelming chaos of the International Secret Intelligence Service (ISIS), as the spy agency's comptroller, Cyril. Archer's secretary Cheryl (or is it Carol now?) and ex-girlfriend and fellow agent Lana, voiced by Judy Greer and Aisha Tyler, respectively, add in a nice element of office-place bickering and jealousy. But perhaps the series' best role is Archer's boss and mother, voiced by the always great Jessica Walter. Walter pretty much channels her Arrested Development character, Lucille Bluth, just as the head of a spy agency, and her delivery of some wonderfully ridiculous lines (such as her description of stirred up loins and "if not stirred -- frothing!") is hilarious.
