Man, that was a great episode. Season 5 has been a little spotty, with only a few really solid episodes thus far, but this was by far the strongest. It had everything: a puzzling serial killer mystery, a perfectly cast guest star (Nestor Carbonell from Lost), some great comedic banter, progress in the Shawn/Juliet storyline, and a gift to long-time fans in the form of surprising callbacks to earlier episodes. My only question is why wasn't this the summer finale? While not necessarily a cliffhanger, Shawn 2.0 was perfectly set-up to have people wondering over the next few months if Shawn was finally ready to tell Juliet the whole truth about his fake psychic powers and his feelings for her. Judging by the strength of this episode, I'm anticipating next week's actual summer finale even more.
Shawn Spencer has always had problems with authority or competition, so when criminal profiler Declan Rand (Carbonell) swooped into town, he wasn't happy. Not only was Rand better at movie trivia and more perceptive at the initial murder scene, but he was also quick to ask Juliet out on a date. Add to that, Rand was so filthy rich, he had Curt Smith from Tears for Fears (Shawn's favorite band) living at his mansion, playing whatever tunes he wanted to hear. Gus called him Shawn 2.0, but Shawn called him his mortal enemy. Thus, the episode played out with both guys trying to upstage the other at crime scenes, and in the end, both were right about the murderer, even if they used different methods to come to the same conclusion.
