Discuss: Series with Notable Theme Songs - Featured

In recent times, many series have opted to forgo the full-length opening theme song/sequence and replace it with either a sort of half song (think Gossip Girl and Greek) or just a flash of the show's name (think Lost and as of last season, One Tree Hill). Even shows that used to have full length opening credits have recently started to abbreviate them - like Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy.

I agree that some shows don't need a full opening sequence (I can't imagine any sort of opening credits that would do Lost justice), but in general, it's a great way to set the stage for the show.

10 of my personal favorite opening credits/sequences that I believe are particularly defining to their respective shows:

1. Friends (1994) - Watch!

2. Six Feet Under - Watch!

3. Dexter - Watch!

4. Arrested Development - Watch!

5. Mad Men - Watch!

6. The Big Bang Theory - Watch!

7. The West Wing - Watch!

8. Star Trek: The Next Generation - Watch!

9. The O.C. - Watch!

10. The Sopranos - Watch!

What are your favorite TV theme songs/opening credits?

What? Have you all forgotten about "That 70's show"?And "The Dream We Left Behind" should be definitely included in this list. For me, Little Boxes from weeds is the best, as it changes with every episode and has been sung by many different artists (does anyone know why the producers decided to cut the intro?) On the other hand, mini-intros like LOST also go well (and really, at some point during the last season of friends i could not hear the starting tune anymore without getting effy...)

I have many favs, most of which have been previously mentioned. The two I find lacking from this list would be Sons of Anarchy "The Dream We Left Behind" by Pedestrian and Saving Grace "Saving Grace" by Everlast

Great discussion!I can't help noticing that virtually all of the shows mentioned have been from the last 10 years or so. I think this is unfortunate since many of the great t.v. theme songs from earlier decades far surpass the theme songs of today's shows. Here are my top ten picks for theme songs. 1. Peter Gunn (1958) Henry Mancini. What else needs to be said?2. I Love Lucy (1951) Over fifty years later and if someone were to sing this song everyone would know what T.V. show it came from. How many of today's shows has a theme song that memorable?3. Sanford and Son (1972) Quincy Jones wrote this classic T.V. theme song4. Mission: Impossible (1966) Great sophisticated theme song.5.Friends (1994) The song is a wonderful burst of pop fluff. Exactly what a theme song for a sitcom should be.6. The Twilight Zone (1959) This is one of those theme songs that has transcended its original purpose and now is used to refer to anything strange or unusual.7.The A-Team (1983) Great Action/Adventure music.8. Doctor Who (1963) This is my absolute favorite scifi theme music. It weird and wonderful all at the same time.9. The Greatest American Hero (1981) The music is more famous than the actual show.10. The Simpsons (1989) Danny Elfman composed this theme. It ingeniously telegraphs the Simpsons' misfit character with the use of a tritone between the first notes of the melody.

Why has no one mentioned The Wire? The season 4 song has to be the BEST opening credits out of any show I have ever seen.

I agree, the death of the opening sequence is unfortunate! Again I go back to Buffy - amazing sequence that left me so pumped for the show! And Angel always left me with that sombre, sad feeling that prefectly set the mood.I enjoyed the Grey's opening sequence. The credits set the mood - whether it be dramatic, comedic, action. I appreciate the shows that have kept them!Lost,on the otherhand, is perfect short. The eerie sound effects followed by the twisting Lost sign makes you get lost yourself!

No one has included the True Blood theme song! It's one of the most relevant to its own show and the sequence they show with it is so creepy and mysterious! I LOVE it!

Friends theme makes me dance all the time.Angel one is so beautiful very dark and deep.Dead like me is quite funny as the big bang (love the voice)Six feet under, Dexter, and greys anatomy are very very good onesFor Er,Alias or Dawson's creek 7 heaven, and Charmed it is the music.the first too are strong and fast and the other ones you just want to sing them out loud! and my favorite, though it's very simple, it's nip tuck opening credits. Just love it. I wrote a lot because, I just love opening credits, you get to see the actor's names (yeah youpi) and most of the time you don't really paid attention to the final credits. When you face at the beggining of one episode an intense drama, the theme gives you to time to breath and to prepare yourself for.... worse. It has to power to deeply connect yourself with your show. And the truth is than I missed them a lot!!! Am I the only one?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer has probably the BEST theme song and BEST opening sequence ever. I love how the last shot of Buffy would change every couple of season!Buffy's spinoff show Angel had a fantastic, sad sounding theme too.Love the Mad Men theme, especially the very end that places the strings against more of a beat.Arrested Development too :)Dexter, I actually prefer the slower song that runs over the credits and during some of the slower or narrative scenes in the show.No cartoons made the list I notice but I would suggest Robot Chicken (the tune gets stuck in your head and the clips are so entertaining!) and American Dad (so much fun to sing along, plus the news headlines were always funny, more so than Roger's outfits).I've probably left out some obvious contenders.

I was totally expecting Dawson's Creek. I had never even seen an episode until like last week and I knew the theme song. I vote for it as a runner-up.
