The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of August 24, 2015

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed—or at least be able to fake it—with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   Switched at Birth (Midseason Premiere) Monday at 8:00pm on ABC Family Why: Bay and Emmett broke UP, which is probably the most traumatizing thing to happen to Bay since she learned she was SWITCHED AT BIRTH. Meanwhile, Daphne is worried her friends don't like Mingo, and someone is pregnant... BUT WHO? Prepare to talk about: How you'd react to any subsequent traumas if you'd been switched at birth (like, "first I was switched at birth, and now I dropped my ice cream cone?!"); how Bay and Emmett will obviously, obviously, obviously get back together, since they belong together (it's true, don't argue); what you think of Mingo (if you don't watch the show, you can't go wrong with just saying, "Well, you go first, because I'm still trying to put what I want to say into words.")   America's Next Top Model Wednesday at 8:00pm on The CW Why: It's the makeover episode, which should be reason enough. The makeover episode is pretty much the only episode worth watching of every season (especially these beyond ridiculous later seasons), plus Hadassah looks like she's going to FREAK OUT, and she's super annoying (and I'm still bitter that they cut the beyond gorgeous Maleesa last episode). Who doesn't love "models" sobbing over a haircut? Prepare to talk about: How they could possibly top last season's beard weave; how Hadassah is just the worst (runner up: the girl with the teeth who cries all the time); who gets the worst makeover (other than all of them).   2015 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday at 9:00pm on MTV Why: Because the VMAs exist to shock. OK, in theory, the show exists to award musicians for their videos (which, as you've no doubt already pointed out, aren't even shown on MTV anymore), but ever since Madonna opened the first one writhing on the floor in a wedding dress singing "Like a Virgin," people have watched in order to see what "shocking" thing happens. In completely unrelated news, Miley Cyrus is hosting this year. Prepare to talk about: Kids today.       Leah E. Friedman  is the editor of SideReel.com. Tyra guides the models in a photo shoot where they are bound together and the first contestant is eliminated.   Read More... http://www.buddytv.com/slideshows/americas-next-top-model-cycle-22-episode-3-photos-4903.aspx

Angelea Preston on Americas Next Top Model Lawsuit: Im Not Afraid of Tyra Banks

Former Americas Next Top Model contestant Angelea Preston is speaking out about her decision to sue the show and creator/host Tyra Banks for $3 million likening the series to top model prison. The brunt of the claims, though, are aimed directly at Tyra herself.   Read More... http://feeds.wetpaint.com/~r/wetpaint/latest/excerpt/~3/bLCyhlhTb5M/

The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of August 3, 2015

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed—or at least be able to fake it—with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   UnREAL (Season Finale) Monday at 10:00pm on Lifetime Why: Because this show's become a cult hit! I was going to say an "under-the-radar cult hit" but that would be kind of redundant, right? Anyway, it was created by former Bachelor staffers and it's prompted a response from Bachelor / ette host Chris Harrison (he's not a fan), which should be enough to make it a guilty pleasure for both fans and haters of dating shows. Prepare to talk about: How every character on this show is nucking futs! How it's probably closer to real life than we want to admit; why it's taken Shiri Appleby so long to find a show since Roswell went off the air in 2002.   America's Next Top Model (Season Premiere) Wednesday at 9:00pm on The CW Why: Look, it's not what once was. Basically, after they did the short girl season, it never recovered from a being a dumb concept show cycle after cycle. THAT BEING SAID, it's still Top Model and it still has a place in the pop culture pantheon, especially during the dog days of summer. I'll admit I don't like the girls vs. guys concept, but whatever, I'll still watch. And so will Alex . [Tyra voice] And so. Will. You. Prepare to talk about: TYRA'S SHORT HAIR (finally walking the Mia-Farrow-in-Rosemary's-Baby walk... except not even, what a hypocrite); which of the contestants is the most forgettable; how happy you are Bryanboy is gone.   Project Runway (Season Premiere) Thursday at 9:00pm on Lifetime Why: The high class yang to Top Model 's yin, it's only fitting that Project Runway also premieres this week. Also (fairly severely) diminished from its heyday (sigh, will we ever have a year like 2006 again?), it's still our best/only way to get our bitchy fashion fix. Let's hope they've dropped the Red Robin challenge (lol) this year. That was just sad. Prepare to talk about: Wheee! How much further downmarket can they go?! How you'd love to have Tim Gunn giving you advice every day; whether the show will ever produce another designer on the same level as Christian Siriano; how Zac Posen is NO Michael Kors.   Leah E. 5 Reasons We Love Watching: America's Next Top Model

If you’re reading this, I likely don’t need to tell you that America’s Next Top Model is approaching its 22nd cycle. TWENTY-TWO. Few things make me feel simultaneously lazy as hell and SUPER productive more than the realization that I’ve plowed through twenty** whole seasons of a reality show that was birthed on UPN. (**No one actually counts the first season. ADRIANNE CURRY IS DEAD TO THE WHOLE FRANCHISE.) So let’s bring on the next one, shall we? If you’re not quite as eager to embrace cycle 22 as I am, allow me to attempt to convince you with these 5 reasons: 5. Tyra Banks (aka famed supermodel, aka New York Times best-selling author, aka Lightbulb Head, aka our hostess with the mostest) manages to boil down the art of modeling to a science. It’s almost like an idiot could do it: 4. She’s the ultimate administrator of tough love. (I don’t know about you, but I’ve certainly never yelled at a girl like that before in my life.) 3. She’s got a real knack for theatrics. Man, you really got us good, Tyra! 2. Okay, enough about Tyra. Her friends are pretty cool too. (Sore subject on those last two... #NeverForget) 1. Makeovers! Everybody gets them, and everybody HATES THEM. Really, you’d think Tyra was forcing them to saw off one of their limbs. Well, almost everybody hates them... Are you stoked to witness another model hopeful super-smize his or her way to the TOP? Don’t miss America’s Next Top Model when cycle 22 premieres on August 5th on The CW . div.reason h3 { clear: both; padding-top: 30px; } div.reason img { float: left; width: 400px; } div.reason p { clear: both; }
