Americas Next Top Model Series Finale: And the Winner Is ... the Modeling Industry

On Friday night, America's Next Top Model aired its cycle 22 finale, which doubled as a series finale. The episode was stacked with what was probably its strongest final four in years: rocker chick Mikey Heverly, girl-next-door Lacey Rogers, daughter of Ghanaian diplomat Mame Adjei, and Nyle DiMarco, the show's first-ever deaf contestant, who ended up being crowned the winner. He cried; I cried. His tearful (and also deaf) mom pulled a reverse of Maury 's "baby mama finding out her boyfriend is not the father " sheran out from the ANTM greenroom, down the hallway, and onto the set to embrace her son while a whimper of confetti showered the two. This ho-hum celebration from the show's producers actually seems fitting considering the creator, host, and former supermodel Tyra Banks nonchalantly announced the series was ending on Twitter two months ago. This announcement surprised no one, of course. After all, the show had been on the air for 22 seasons. And like many who had been watching from the beginning, I was mostly happy it was calling it quits, as it seemed the series had been lumbering to a slow death for quite some time. Yet there was a part of me that was also melancholy. I was going to miss the reality-TV drama, the Tyra-isms (" smize ," " booty tooch ," and " hoe, but make it fashion " are some of my favorites), the photo shoots, the CoverGirl commercial shoots and prizes, and the insider look at the modeling industry. And that's when it dawned on me: The America's Next Top Model franchise (which includes more than 40 international spinoffs) is one of the more important things to happen to the modeling industry in the past 15 years. Despite the glaring issue that ANTM never produced a bona fide supermodel, this is not the craziest theory. Hear me out.    Read More... http://www.vulture.com/2015/12/americas-next-top-model-series-finale-the-winner-is-the-modeling-industry.html

Americas Next Top Model Was the Only Reality Show That Understood Camp

When I think about my favorite moment of Americas Next Top Model , which ends tonight after 13 years and 22 seasons (sorry, Tyra, cycles), I dont think about that girl fainting or Tyra freaking out at Tiffany because she wasnt serious enough when she got kicked off of the show. The moment that sticks with me is at the very beginning of the tenth season. All the prospective contestants were enrolled at a private modeling school and wearing sexy pleated skirts, knee socks, and navy blazers. Theyre gathered around a stage on the football field waiting for the announcement of who is going to be the homecoming queen. They all think its going to be one of them, but its not. Of course not. Its Tyra.   Read More... http://www.vulture.com/2015/12/americas-next-top-model-camp.html

The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of November 30, 2015

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed—or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   The Great Holiday Baking Show (Series Premiere) Monday at 10:00pm on ABC Why: Cookies, cakes, and maybe a jelly doughnut or two for those of us of the hebraic persuasion? Sorry War on Christmas, but this definitely says Holiday Baking Show , not Christmas Baking Show . Either way, why not spend time watching people make delicious sweets while remaining completely sedentary on the couch? It seems like a win-win for your gut and a lose-lose for your blood sugar! And I mean that in the best possible way. 'Tis the season to be chubby, fa-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Prepare to talk about: What kind of holiday delight you would make if you had the skills, the equipment, and the desire to do anything; which item presented looks great but probably tastes like butt; which item presented looks like butt but probably tastes great; how it seems only right that The Biggest Loser premieres after this series ends.   Empire (Midseason Finale) Wednesday at 9:00pm on FOX Why: Lucious is trying to buy a streaming service because HAH, I guess Tidal worked out so well for Jay Z? Seriously, this show is just straight-up RIPPING STUFF FROM THE HEADLINES like Law & Order . It's not going to go well. It never goes well. Lucious, you make bad decisions! Who let you run a company? Meanwhile, Cookie is going to throw another concert — this time at the prison in which she did time. This will definitely also go well, for sure. As long as Cookie's sister Candace is there. Who doesn't love Candace? Prepare to talk about: What's up with Cookie's sister Candace! She's like Cookie but even Cookie-er! How much you'd pay to watch an Empire spinoff starring Candace; why anyone would want to own a streaming service because exactly zero of them make money.   America's Next Top Model (Series Finale) Friday at 9:00pm on The CW Why: It's the end of an era. I'm legit sadface about this (that's how the kids talk now, right?) because this show has been on my entire adult life and to see it go out like this , with the foursome of terrible Mikey, beautiful Mamé, the girl whose name I can't remember with the Liza Minelli look, and drool-worthy Nyle is just not right. I mean, sure, I love Nyle and I love Mamé, but it's just not right that the show that gave us so much isn't going out with three girls doing a CoverGirl commercial followed by two girls walking a semi-real runway show. It's just not. And I would know because I've spent approximately 7200 hours of my life watching Top Model . We were all rooting for you, Tyra. Oh well, either way, someone will be America's. Next. (And. Final.) Top. Model. Prepare to talk about: Ugh, Mikey, what a douche; Tyra's strange-ass wardrobe this cycle; this stupid "epic" runway; how this finale definitely didn't need to be broken into two episodes; whoever wins, I guess.     Leah E.
