'Arrow' EPs Tease There Is Lot More to Learn About Oliver as a Killer

Arrow tried something very risky in "Spectre of the Gun." While in season 5, Oliver put killing "back on the table" the show also attempted to pull off a gun control debate episode. Whether the experiment worked is probably up to the individual viewer to decide. Why 'Arrow' Needs to Give More Characters Flashback Stories

"Spectre of the Gun" is far from the first time that Arrow has given a flashback storyline to someone other than Oliver Queen. In season 2, while Oliver was involved, Sara had a pretty heavy flashback storyline in "Heir to the Demon." Season 2's "Suicide Squad" handed things over almost solely to Diggle in the flashback and the same is true of season 3's "The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak." "Spectre of the Gun" involved another character getting their flashback spotlight with Rene. The episode should start a new trend for Arrow . Arrow  broke from its traditional vigilante fighting on Wednesday night to tackle the complicated issue of gun violence in a, for lack of a better phrase, very special episode. Executive producers  Marc Guggenheim  and  Wendy Mericle  have been wanting to tackle a political issue on the show for some time, and after a while of searching the writing team settled on gun violence as the appropriate topic for Oliver Queen ( Stephen Amell ) and his team to tackle. The episode wasn't purely about bringing two sides of a debate to the  Arrow  audience though. The episode also forced Oliver to become a hero in his own right as mayor without relying on the darkness of his Green Arrow hood.
