Remember after season 9 I was convinced that the show was on its way out and the writing had turned from bad to downright awful? Well I'd say that season 10 has been the strongest CM series for a long time, the show hasn’t had this good writing since series 7! Season 10 kicked off with the introduction of new character Kate Callahan, who was definitely giving off more of a sassy Prentiss-like vibe from the start and she fitted in with the rest of the team right away. Her back story was fleshed out enough so that when the finale did come round, I was concerned for her daughter/niece’s well being and interested in her previous cases too. The writers have obviously stepped up their game this series, with some inventive and fresh ideas for story lines and episodes this series, thank goodness! I can only think of 1 or 2 episodes which I’d call weaker or more ‘filler’ types but literally the quality of the show this time has been so much better than series 8 and 9m good to see CM back on form :) The plane crash episode was inventive, the BAU flashback back story episode was a great spin on things even though they killed Gideon off off-screen and the episode set in a prison were all unique plots and gave all the characters the chance to have a role to play. Favourite moments include Rossi finding out he has a daughter and grandson and being overwhelmed, Morgan and his girlfriend getting serious and actually staying together as well as all the Morgan/Reid moments that reappeared this season, hooray! Rossi being his usual sassy self and helping Kate settle into the team in the early episodes good to see, Rossi is at his best when he’s mentoring others :) The series finale was the shortest one I think I’ve ever watched, only 39 mins and seemed to speed along a bit quickly, but hey interesting concept but it didn’t really feel like a ‘finale’ (or at least not up to the same emotional intensity as some of the previous finales). However the episode they should have used for the finale was episode “Mr Scratch” - there have been Criminal Minds episodes that have made me go “yuck” or weep or jump but this beautifully directed episode genuinely scared me. Definitely the creepiest episode I’ve ever watched and I was terrified for the fate of several of the characters - the part Hotch had to play in it all was heartbreaking. There definitely needs to be a follow up of the events of Mr Scratch at some point… The only disappointments this season were that Hotch and Beth broke up off-screen (I know there were scheduling conflicts and all but still…) and Reid still hasn’t been given a happy love life (though it was hinted at, hooray!) The ending to the season did feel a wee bit rushed, but on the whole I really enjoyed almost all the episodes for the first time in years and it was realistic and gripping too. I’m excited for the spin-off Criminal Minds Beyond Borders to air, the back door pilot was solid and left a lot of threads to tie up. Fingers crossed Criminal Minds itself gets a renewal, I think there’s still room for another season’s worth of stories, so long as the writers keep up their good work!
