Downton Abbey Star Made Dame, Rod Stewart Knighted By Queen Elizabeth II

Move over, Maggie Smith . Downton Abbey now has two dames. Penelope Wilton, who played Isobel Crawley on all six seasons of the popular British drama, was made a dame the female equivalent of a knight by Queen Elizabeth II on Friday. Wilton, a prolific stage actress who has also appeared in films ranging from Shaun of the Dead to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, was honored for her services to drama. ‘Downton Abbey’ Creator’s New Series ‘Doctor Thorne’ Heads to Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is still building its library of original content, though it has a few standouts (mostly comedies like Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle). One thing it is clearly looking to specifically expand on, though, are international acquisitions. This is something Hulu got in the game with early on, and Netflix has (of course) done very well in the last few years. And when specifically talking about offerings from across the pond, PBS is no longer the primary place to find British comedies and dramas. Carnival Films, the NBC-Universal owned creator of ratings juggernaut Downton Abbey , is producing Jamestown , an eight part drama about the first British settlers embarking on their lives in America. The show was been commisioned by pan-Euro pay TV giant Sky . Bill Gallagher ( The Paradise ) has written the show.
