'The Walking Dead' special effects featurette: Expect a lot more killing in Season 3

Victor Scalise is a guy with a very cool job. He's the visual director for "The Walking Dead's" special effects department and in a new featurette from AMC, Scalise talks about how he and other digital wizards ramp up the tension on the show and even add entire 3D computer-generated landscapes. The CG crew used motion capture in Los Angeles to get footage of actors moving as zombies and now they've got several CG walkers they can insert in scenes. In the video, Scalise shows us which zombies from the Season 2 finale were added by his folks -- for instance, two zombies who are lurching behind Andrea (Laurie Holden) as she tries to get out of the utterly infested Hershel's farm.He also shows us how CG animators built the finale's last scene, the pan to an aerial shot of the prison that we know will figure prominently in Season 3. "It was a fun shot... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/06/the-walking-dead-special-effects-featurette-expect-a-lot-more-killing-in-season-3.html

The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara Doesn’t Want You to Hate Carl

The Walking Dead 's executive producer Glen Mazzara says two major issues arose in the show's writers' room this year: (1) do zombies climb ladders? (Consensus: no.) And (2), will people blame Carl for Dale's death? "We had a debate," Mazarra tells the L.A. Times . "Everyone wants to know why Carl's not in the house" — indeed! — "[and it's because] it's boring to sit in a house. And he's a little boy and he wants to mix it up and stuff," Mazzara says. But one of Carl's bored-busting excursions involved him antagonizing a mud-trapped zombie, who later escaped and killed Dale . Mazzara says he and the writers worried that "because Dale is a beloved character and if this other character is involved and responsible for that death, is the audience going to now hate Carl?" Attention, Glen Mazzara: Everyone already hated Carl! No worries on the Dale front. http://www.vulture.com/2012/06/the-walking-dead-carl-dale-glen-mazzara.html

'The Walking Dead': Michael Rooker's Merle is back... and bionic?

Okay, so maybe Merle Dixon -- the character played by Michael Rooker on AMC's "The Walking Dead" -- isn't exactly bionic, but in a new Season 3 production still released by AMC he is sporting a tough looking device on the stump formerly known as Merle's right hand.Which tells us two things: 1. His appearance is likely NOT just another Daryl Dixon fever dream hallucination and 2. He's managed to overcome sawing off his own hand in order to slip out of the handcuffs Rick Grimes left him shackled in on an Atlanta rooftop. Is he hanging with The Governor?Hard to say. There's no template since neither of the Dixon brothers existed in Robert Kirkman's comic book source material and AMC ain't telling. But it's certainly a possibility since showrunner Glen Mazzara and the whole cast and crew are busy filming Governor-centric episodes now with new cast addition David Morrissey. The other possibility is that Merle... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/06/the-walking-dead-michael-rookers-merle-is-back-and-bionic.html

The Walking Dead Season 3 Bombshell! Guess Who's Coming Back?!

Ever since he was left on that rooftop in season 1 of The Walking Dead, fans have wondered what has become of Merle Dixon.  Would he return?  Would be become the Governor?  Is he now herding zombies in New Zealand with one hand?  The answer is here folks.  Merle IS returning, and AMC has the photos to prove it.   Here's a quick look for you: Looks like Merle has obtained some Army of Darkness Ash-style add-ons!  Wonder who he is shooshing?  Maybe I'm mistaken, but the background looks similar to that of the first picture of The Governor that was released from The Walking Dead's third season.  Could it be Merle has joined up with The Governor?
