Season 5 of The Crown will cover the John Major government years, the turmoil of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage breakdown and the tragic death of Diana in 1997. Imelda Staunton will take over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Olivia Colman. Lesley Manville will be playing Princess Margaret, taking over from Helena Bonham Carter. Jonathan Pryce is set to take over the role of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, from Tobias Menzies. Elizabeth Debicki will take on the role of Princess Diana from season 5 onwards and Dominic West will play Prince Charles. Season 5 of The Crown will be released in 2022.
