The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of June 15, 2015

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed—or at least be able to fake it—with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.

Stitchers: S1E3

Stitchers

Tuesday at 9:00pm on ABC Family

Why: Because this show is a delightfully stupid summer palate cleanser starring attractive young people. (Hey, shows don't have to be good to be part of the #internetconversation!) Plus, it's still early enough in the show's run that they're constantly explaining the premise to new viewers characters. Short version: a genius girl with a mysterious, forgotten upbringing and a neurological disorder (that sounds made up) has all the right ingredients to be part of a supersupersuper secret government program that attaches her mind to those of the recently deceased in order to solve crimes. And she has to be barely dressed to do so!

Prepare to talk about: Whether star Emma Ishta will ever be able to do a convincing American accent; how everything that goes on in the lab is a sexual harassment lawsuit waiting to happen; how this supposedly secret program seems to have, like, zero security aside from a stainless steel elevator.

Complications: S1E1

Complications (Series Premiere)

Thursday at 9:00pm on USA

Why: For one thing, this stars one of the internet's many boyfriends, Jason O'Mara. For another, USA knows how do shows about doctors and shows about vengeance and this is a show about a doctor with a vengeance! Doc Internet Boyfriend is still devastated over the loss of his daughter, becomes a "vigilante hero" and following that, there are... COMPLICATIONS! (Hey! That's the name of the show!)

Prepare to talk about: Whether the fact that all USA shows are kind of the same a #brand strength or weakness (if they're too the same, you know what I mean?); how you still miss Terra Nova; whether a doctor-with-a-vengeance is, uh, a good doctor.

True Detective: S2E1

True Detective (Season Premiere)

Sunday at 9:00pm on HBO

Why: Remember how a year ago everyone who was anyone (with Twitter) was all about tweeting their #TrueDetectiveSeason2 dream casts? Well, it's #TrueDetectiveSeason2 time! This time with twice as many true detectives! Also, it's set in Los Angeles, and for some reason true detective Rachel McAdams will stick a knife in a tree, per the trailer. That's pretty much all we know, other than the fact that WE KNOW WE'LL LOVE IT.

Prepare to talk about: If anything in the new season could be as creepy as you wanted Carcosa to be in season one; how season one was kind of disappointing, now that you think about it; which of the true detectives is the truest detective (and then imagine Tyra Banks saying "Congratulations, you're still in the running towards being America's Next Top True Detective," or maybe that's just me, whatever).

Hey... I like Stitchers. The second episode had an admittedly juvenile script. I wonder if it was the same writer as the pilot, which I felt was a lot more hip and witty. I don't know what its L7 ratings are, but its L/SD ratings aren't looking to good. I hope it tries to be more like Scorpion, intelligent and cool and less like a spoof of a syfy series.

Complications ... I don't know what to think yet. Will have to see it. I do like Jason O'Mara, but he doesn't "make" a show, so we'll have to wait and see.

No True Detective for me. No no no no no.
