The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of June 22, 2015

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed—or at least be able to fake it—with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.

Mr. Robot: S1E1

Mr. Robot (Series Premiere)

Wednesday at 10:00pm on USA

Why: Because as tinfoil hat types are fond of saying, "IF YOU'RE NOT PARANOID, YOU'RE NOT PAYING ATTENTION!" Nah, not really. But this show is about a programmer who's recruited by a hacker with anti-capitalist tendencies. That hacker is played by Christian Slater, who was, at one time, a very cool person... apparently (ask your aunt). Mr. Slater aside, this show's got some crazy good buzz, and it's about to pay down $100k in fans' debts, so there's some real incentive to be a fan!

Prepare to talk about: Christian Slater's a thing again? Whether it's weird to sell ads against a show with an anti-capitalist hero; how it's ironic that USA Network is owned by NBC Universal/Comcast (aka the "We'd be the Monopoly Man if we could!" corporation), and they're making a show with a strong anti-capitalist message.

Under the Dome: S3E1

Under the Dome (Season Premiere)

Thursday at 10:00pm on CBS

Why: Those who know me know that I'm kind of obsessed with this show. I don't love it — I don't even like it! I didn't even like the book! — but I love something about it. Maybe it's that the characters constantly remind each other that they're all UNDER A DOME, maybe it's that this is a town with a psycho-to-normal ratio of about 7-1, maybe I just like butterflies! The point is this show has managed to defy my expectations and stick around. People want to know about that crazy dome! It's a bonafide summer hit and I can't figure out why, just that it's charming in its own idiotically fun way.

Prepare to talk about: How they actually do have a way out of THE DOME (spoiler: it's a tunnel, LOL); why there are so many butterflies in Chester's Mill; who's going to be murdered this season (there are so many murders UNDER THE DOME, it's crazy).

Humans: S1E1

Humans (Series Premiere)

Sunday at 9:00pm on AMC

Why: Robots are cool. Sweden is cool. At the risk of doing the "the mug is round, the jar is round; they should call it Roundtine," bit, I'll say that Swedish shows about robots are by definition cool, and this is a British/America adaptation of a Swedish robot show. The concept is that they look like us (I guess that makes them androids), and their function is to help out around the house, apparently. They also might be sinister. Seriously, though, this show just looks COOL.

Prepare to talk about: How clearly the robots are sinister! Haven't people on TV shows about robots ever watched a show about robots? They're always evil! (This is also my gripe about Jurassic World.) How bad are these robots going to be? Battlestar Galactica/wipe out humanity bad or Bender Bending Rodriguez/crude, drunk hustler bad?

Is it just me or does the Robot guy look like the Under the Dome guy without his glasses?

I'm actually really looking forward to Mr.Robot and Humans.
I'm not a big Under the Dome fan. I'll probably watch the first episode then decide it
hasn't improved and pass on it. But you never know!

And no Zaz, it's just you. Maybe in those small picks, but if you see them both up close, Mr.Robot guy has weird eyes.

I watched 3 episodes of Humans, i'm not getting the sinister robot vibe from this show, def had a lot of sinister people, without giving much away, people act like... well, people when they think no one is watching and utilize their robots in some sketchy ways. The only robot i'm getting "sinister" from is the female main character, who clearly is effing with the mom of the family that bought her.

You should check out The Refugees. I'm not sure why that show is not on sidereel, but it was pretty good, I def gave it a higher rating than imdb (which is rare for me). Here is the imdb link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4011172/?ref_=nv_sr_1

I like Mr.Robot and Humans so much, so 2 outta 3 is a fair score! Thanks for the tip, Lea! Following you was a good choice :)
