'Scream' S1E9: The Dance

★ ★ ★

Once again, Scream proved that it just doesn’t know what kind of show it wants to be, and that’s problematic — especially since there’s only one episode left in the season. While Scream maintained a steady pace for the first three episodes, the post-Riley portion (viewers are actually organizing the season according to that) lost all that it had worked hard for: tension.

With only five deaths in nine episodes, the death toll (and lack of gore or scares) is only one of several reasons why Scream just doesn’t feel right. Compare that to Harper’s Island, a slasher series coming out two years before American Horror Story, where 33 characters in its 13 episode run! (That’s not even including the ones taking place before the show and the ones in the web series.) Heck, each episode title is also an onomatopoeia for the sound of the murder weapon in action that week. Each subsequent season of Harper’s would have had a new cast and a new mystery — that’s right. It was an anthology series before AHS re-popularized the concept.

But enough of that; back to the episode! In a final attempt to throw us off our suspicions, Scream managed to chuck in a couple of curveballs before making the big reveal next week: Kieran may or may not be Brandon’s son (my money’s on not, although that would make his relationship with Emma even more messed up); Kieran hung out with Nina the day before she died; and Branson flew the coop with a dead guard left behind. While the mystery aspect of the show is really stale, one thing that Scream does surprisingly well is keep you guessing about the killer’s (or killers') identity. On that note, does anyone else find it extremely naive of Emma to trust Kieran over Audrey? I mean, I know Emma lets her feelings get in the way of everything, but really? See, this is why Emma wouldn’t last a second against a killer who wasn’t actively keeping her alive.

Branson under interrogation was one of the better parts of the episode. Entirely fed-up and acting very suspicious, it was fun to watch him sarcastically bait Emma and the cops (which isn’t very hard to do since Emma and Sheriff Hudson are two of the most incompetent characters on the show). You know, I felt for Hudson when Brock took over, but now I see that he really can’t do his job. Besides forgetting four of the victims (at least he remembered Riley!), Hudson did what every small town sheriff is definitely legally permitted to do: enter a home without probable cause or a warrant. Either way, he got what was coming to him when he was kidnapped by the killer(s). Now only these people weren’t at the dance or arrived late: Brooke, Piper, and Kieran. Do what you will with that information.

Just throwing this out there, anyone else curious about how Emma and Kieran (aka the gross, creepy, maybe incestuous, soon-to-be-step-siblings) out-costumed Noah? I mean, how is it that Emma and Kieran went as characters from Pulp Fiction and Noah just went as Dracula? No Will Graham costume? Or a very self-aware Ghostface one? I may just be being a little nitpicky.

It definitely leaves you questioning who is behind all of this, but I'm still wanting more fear factor. I'm thinking Piper is the main killer with the help of a second one. And yeah, how did Noah not have a more creative costume? I'm worried about Brooke...And Harper's Island was awesome.

I'm with you in that kieran can't be the killer, it's to obvious (maybe I'm putting to much hope in the writers of the show). I'm guessing it can be Piper has lookatallthesetvshows said because we absolutely know nothing of her and she doesn't have anyone to corroborate her back story. Well we will know next week.
