The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of February 19, 2018

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.

Seven Seconds

Seven Seconds
(Series Premiere)

Friday at 3:00 am on Netflix

Why: Seven Seconds is a new crime drama from The Killing's Veena Sud, focused on another dead teenager. However, this series is not about a missing white girl, but a black boy on a bicycle - Brenton Butler - who gets run over by a cop (who had been rushing to the hospital to witness the birth of his child), and the department's subsequent attempts to cover it up. Similar to Showtime's The Chi, the series is a look at how a murder impacts (and destroys) a family and a community. Similar to a few shows of the times (most notably American Crime), it's also a look at how, to put it bluntly, you get screwed over by the police and the justice department if you are not of a certain race and class. The series has mostly cast unknowns, with the exception of the always excellent Regina King as Breton's mother and a bit part by Gretchen Mol. Unlike The Killing, Seven Seconds is not a mystery of who did it - we know this right away - which means that it can avoid some of the failings and frustrations of that series. While not perfect, Seven Seconds instead appears to be another timely and thought provoking series about many of the issues and failings of our country today.

Prepare to talk about: Black Lives Matter; breakout star Clare-Hope Ashitey; whether this series is more sad or more hopeful.

Ash vs Evil Dead: S3E1

Ash vs. Evil Dead
(Season Premiere)

Sunday at 9 pm on Starz

Why: Starz's successful horror comedy based on the Evil Dead franchise - which last aired in 2016 - at long last returns for Season 3 with a new showrunner! What can we expect from this new season? According to star Bruce Campbell, this season will bring us a breakdown and an unhinged Ash. Additionally, we'll meet his long-lost daughter, Brandy (played Arielle Carver-O’Neill), who will have a lot in common with her father. This adds a new layer the the show that allows Ash to explore fatherhood. Additionally, Ash's own father (played by Lee Majors) will be making his own return appearance this season! Campbell also assures us that while the first 2 seasons were good (and were generally critically well received), that this is the best season by far. For any fan of the series, it will be a delight to have back!

Prepare to talk about: The hilarious Ashy Slashy’s Hardware commercial; most importantly, if the show will survive to see a fourth season?

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead
(Midseason Premiere)

Sunday at 9 pm on AMC

Why: Sunday evening is a night of the dead, as we have both the season premiere of Ash vs. Evil Dead on Starz as well as the super-sized midseason premiere of AMC's juggernaut The Walking Dead. Do we even remember what happened in the first half of this season? It actually wasn't very much, as all 8 episodes focused on just a few days when Rick Grimes and his allies launched their attack on Negan and the Saviors. Like The Walking Dead often is, these episodes were both slow and bloody. One of the more notable cliffhangers was that Carl Grimes (played by original castmember Chandler Riggs) was bitten by a white walker and left in a bad place; this midseason premiere will contain his expected sendoff, making it a can't-miss episode.

Prepare to talk about: R.I.P. Carl - are you mad about this (evidently his real-life father was.)?

Already dropped Seven Seconds after one episode... its a cop show about crooked cops that cover up a murder to protect one of their own... you know... a reality show. No spoiler, you find that out in the first 5 minutes.

Kuuuuuuuuuuuurallllllllll......NOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo...

Oh sweet Allah now we have to listen to Andy Lincoln try to emote in his Yosemite Sam accent for like EVERY episode of the Somnolent Dead going forward. Maybe they can time jump Judith up in age to cover up Kurrralllllls departure.(that is if they aren't pulling a dumpster that is) Hasn't she been like 2 for eight years now?

Honestly, the only interesting direction for TWD to go forth on was Rick being sent off, Negan & the Saviors dying and building up the new world under the lead of Carl - since this is no longer an option, this show has literally no leg left to stand on.

BRUCE! Still got it. It's a mostly silly show, but I like it, and to be honest, a little more than Amazon's The Tick.

Not sure I'll even try Seven Seconds. A provenance of Americanized The Killing and American Crime is a bit of a red flag for me. Plus I'm not really in the mood for drama about killed children, since the most recent school mass killings in the US, and knowing statistically that the next one is not that far away.
