The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of June 25, 2018

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.

The Expanse: S3E13

The Expanse
(Season Finale)

Wedneday at 10 pm on Syfy

Why: The Expanse - based on the bestselling books about a colonized solar system where Earth and Mars are fighting for control - is one of the best reviewed Syfy series on TV, and one that often appears on lists of "the best shows you're not watching". And it was canceled. Until it wasn't. Last month, Amazon closed a deal to rescue the series (#SaveTheExpanse) after Syfy had canceled it. So thankfully, this 2 part season finale is *just* a season finale, and not a series finale, particularly since there are more books in the series to cover. The second half of this season (based on the third book of the series), has focused on The Ring, a structure orbiting beyond Uranus that seemingly is a threat to all. In these final 2 episodes, Ashford convinces Earth and Mars that The Ring must be destroyed, but Holden, with the help of his allies, must stop Ashford from destroying the Ring to once again save civilization.

Prepare to talk about: Any characters getting killed off?; what's in store for season 4; how long we'll have to wait until season 4 premieres.

GLOW: S2E1

GLOW
(Season Premiere)

Friday at 3 am on Netflix

Why: GLOW was definitely one of last summer's highlights. Another female-focused series from Netflix (sharing some of the producing talent from Orange is the New Black), GLOW is based on the creation of the real 1986 women’s wrestling TV show of the same title (which stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling). The first season ended with the big TV showdown between rivals and former besties Ruth (Allison Brie) and Debbie (Betty Gilpin), with the show turning out to be a surprise success. This means the the women have earned an official time slot for their show (albeit a crappy one), which they have to figure out how to fill. Additionally, in another timely storyline, there - as might be expected - are issues of harassment coming from both a male network executive and from fans. The entire talented ensemble cast of women returns, as well as the hilarious Marc Maron as the director of the show.

Prepare to talk about: If Ruth and Debbie bury the hatchet (or would that be boring); which GLOW lady is your favorite; which characters we'd like to see more of.

Power: S5E1

Power
(Season Premiere)

Sunday at 9 pm on Starz

Why: Power - one of Starz's biggest successes (it's their most-watched drama and the second most-watched drama on all of pay cable, beaten only by Game of Thrones) - returns for Season 5 this Sunday already having been renewed for Season 6. Season 4 concluded with (and stop reading if you are not up to date) the death of Ghost's daughter Raina (shot by a dirty cop), which set off a chain of additional events that will certainly come back this season, including another murder (of the cop by Ghost's son Tariq) and cover-up. This season as a whole will focus on "grief, revenge, family, and faith", with Ghost (Omari Hardwick), 50 Cent’s Kanan and Joseph Sikora’s Tommy teaming up to take down Dre.

Prepare to talk about: What will happen with Tariq (and Tasha) - can they both avoid getting arrested for murder?; the unlikely team of frenemies; if Starz can avoid distribution problems with various cable networks this season.

Rachel is the product manager of SideReel, and she's eagerly awaiting the day that gyms start doing GLOW-inspired workouts.

I think you meant that Debbie from GLOW is played by BETTY Gilpin, NOT Peri. (: That would have been an interesting twist.

To be sure, those who remember the 1980s are doomed to repeat it. ;-)

I’m glad that The “syfy” [sic?] Channel failed in its malicious attempt to kill off The Expanse. I already have a few of the novels and plan to read them in the interim. (From the titles these first 3 look to be the basis for the first 3 seasons.)

The Expanse was a fantastically somewhat semi-realistic syfi show that dreams of the possible future. Power another great show leaving you thinking "whats next hehe".Can't wait to see the new series.

Is there an email address we can contact?
Haven't received an update for a little while now. Maybe it's a glitch they are unaware of?!

So I left a comment here last week, something like "Hello Sidereel...anybody there", which had a few likes. Now I don't see it anymore. So I guess a moderator removed it. Weird.
Anyway, yes I think the same thing @steelsheen, this place is done. On Rachel's (the editor of this piece) twitter profile it says 'formerly @sidereel'. so she left and I guess the rest did too. Just very odd that they didn't announce it, nothing to let the users know that this place is done for. Really a shame though, I think a lot of people actually liked and used this website. I know I did and I will miss it. :'(

@pencilcup. I remember seeing your comment, I also don not remember seeing as many comments as there are above. Everything before Aug 22nd wasn't there when you left your comment. If you click on "contact us" it takes you to the message boards. In one thread they state due to limited resources, they will no longer be updating daily shows. Another thread states they are having trouble updating their front page. Someone is still answering questions.

Is Sidereel dead? I don't usually follow news on SR, but I have noticed the cancellation page not being updated, with Sep 19 being the last active day. Please inform your users of what's happening and the future of this site, ty.

It’s dead, Jim. Or at least all contributor content like this article we are commenting on.
This is the middle of the “big week” networks have hyped for weeks that most shows are premiering, and nary a peep from SideReel.

Sad to see SideReel in this state, and it's a great shame because there is no other similar site that offers the same type of content, information and interaction.

There are many a similar site but what I particularly like about this site is the maturity. People accept others opinions. On many sites the trolling, name calling and general trash talk is completely out of hand, no respect.

I don't think Sidereel dead, its just minamilistic now. Which is all I really need. The news was nice to have, but as is pointed out above, there are plenty of other sites that have news if that is what you want most. Yes, it was nice to have in one place, but sometimes trying to be everything to everyone is a losing game.

The thing that consistantly peeves me about Sidereel (and I have gone through great lengths to find alternative because of this) is that I am consistantly finding shows I want to watch and track that are not in the database. And then I have to open the GetSatisfaction site and request the show to be added. It only takes a couple minutes, but its a pain after you've done it 20 times in a year, because there are so many shows that are not in the database. And then, even after that, there is only a probability that it will be added, and often it is not added.

If the site became more automated in that respect, then it would run itself, and I could totally live without the news. Its still better than anything out there as far as its interface for tracking shows. Others have similar functionality, but this site could be the perfect tracker if it had every show and didn't ask users to do manual work to request shows. Is it 1998?

I've moved on to trakt.tv. It seems alright so far, though I miss the Sidereel interface. But it gets the job done ;)
