The mother's (Cynthia Watros) plastic surgery is horribly distracting. Every scene she is in I find myself just staring and wondering why anyone would be so afraid to age that they would do that to their face.
Besides that, this show is surprisingly good for an MTV show.
It doesn't suck, but I'm not going to die if I can't watch an episode.
EDIT: Okay, I just watched episode 11 and that was the best episode so far. I won't spoil it, but if you can manage to make it through episodes 1 through 10, then this episode is your reward. Again, if they cancel it tomorrow, I'm not going to die, but the show is finally worth watching now. I hope the last two episodes are the same, otherwise this show is getting cancelled.
This show is NOT Resurrection, though both shows have people returning from the dead who don't seem to know what has happened to them. This show is a bit darker than Resurrection...at least so far.
And more importantly, this show is not copying Resurrection.... Resurrection is based upon a 2013 book called "The Returned" and just got to air first. On the other hand, this show, The Returned is based on the 11 year old French 2004 film, "Les Revenants" aka "They Came Back". The film was also made into a French TV show in 2012, which is 3 years ago... so again, this TV show is based on the original, while Resurrection is forth to the table (fifth if you count Babylon Fields from 2007 of which you can watch the unaired pilot on Vimeo and is supposedly being remade by NBC).
Yet another show added to the "let's solve the crime of the week" pile of shows, [insert sarcastic tone of your choice for the rest of this review] Oh but wait! This show has a clever subplot, this time Veronica Mars is a zombie! Same show, same writing, "clever" twist, and different actors.
This has been done, and for some reason people seem to eat it up... like that new show Forever, another "solve the crime of the week clever plot twist, he's 200 years old! If I want to watch a crime being solved each week I don't need a silly/clever plot twist, I can just watch one of the dozen NBC Law and Order shows or one of the dozen CSI shows that just solve crimes without the clever plot twist. No need to sugar coat my crime.
Half way through I started playing Words With Friends... not a good sign for a pilot episode.
I really like Tina Fey, so I'd hoped for better than this... it is just okay, something to pass the time if you have free time. If not, skip it and watch a comedy that will actually make you laugh. I wish that I loved this, but I don't.
UPDATE: So I decided to watch season 2, and just had it playing in the background while doing stuff around the house and I finally laughed during episode 9. To be sure it wasn't a fluke, I paid closer attention for ep. 10 and laughed. then I began to wonder if it was just because Tina Fey shows up in back episodes, since Tina Fey delivers her comedic lines so well. Season 2 is better. Not as much as I'd hoped, but enough for me to increase my 1.5 rating to a 2.5.
This show is my guilty pleasure. I'm 40 watching a show for teenagers, but the plot is twisty and interesting and the acting is good (not great, but not bad, far better than the acting in Extant).
It's a good vampire show, and now that True Blood is gone I need something to sink my teeth into. Fortunately, this is nothing like that horrible Twilight. I'd rate it higher, but it really isn't a 4 and doubtfully will ever be, but it's a great show that is strong enough to last for several more seasons.
I tuned into this show expecting to hate it... the premise is ridiculous and my expectation was that it would be yet another poorly executed comedy. Not to mention the religious overtones, I expected to have Christianity or Catholicism crammed down my throat (I'm Christian, but not of the "Bible thumping, you're going to hell" kind of Christian, so I obviously dislike those Christians who fall into that category).
I'm so happy to say that I was very wrong. The show does comedy REALLY well, I actually laugh and smile throughout the episodes. The last show to have that effect on me was Pushing Daisies 2007-2009.
The religious overtones are either subtle or hilariously overdone intentionally. The show also seems to mock/follow the standard telenovella except the acting is superb. The characters are well developed. this is just a great show that leaves you with a smile, even when you think about it the next day! I hope the writers and actors keep it up for years to come!
UPDATE: Just finished the season, and what a great show, my opinion hasn't changed... it is well worth the watch. Certain parts of every episode are guaranteed to give you the warm fuzzies :)
I'm three years behind but better late than never! This show is one of those absurdist comedies and they've done an excellent job with casting every single character (especially Eliza Coupe!) When I do laugh, I laugh hard but unfortunately that doesn't happen as often as I'd like with this show. I've just finished the first season in three days thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and I'm looking forward to watching season 2. So far, I definitely recommend this.
Who knew that Jann Arden could act and is a great comedian? I only knew that she has a beautiful voice so this show is a wonderful surprise. Jann plays an exaggerated, narcissistic version of herself and the result is hilarious. I highly recommend this wonderfully produced Canadian show.
I had hopes it would be funnier... no show has been able to fill the hole left by Dave Chappelle's show for me. There were a few really good belly laughs in episode 4, but other than that, the laughs were few and far between for me. Since everything in life is so subjective I'd definitely say this show is worth a try.
