ROOTS - SEASON ONE
Throughout, this new Roots is great entertainment, full of action and romance, an engrossing yarn about people who feel very real and relatable. But just as the original “Roots” had a powerful emotional impact on Americans, the new one is likely to do so as well, especially given that questions of race are at the forefront of discussion as much now as ever.
CHEWING GUM - SEASON ONEIt's rude, refreshing and bursting with flavor. E4 has green-lit a unique comedy series from multi-talented actress Michaela Coel, who stars as lead quite perfectly.
EMPIRE - SEASON ONE
There’s something soapy and delicious about Empire.... But it’s a double-edged sword: Empire will either continue to be fun and splashy, while staying grounded and engaging, or it will flame out as so many primetime sudsers have before it, becoming too ridiculous for its own good.
UGLY BETTY - SEASON THREE
A show and a heroine larger than life, twice as colorful and infinitely more adorable.
MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE - SEASON SEVEN
At the true core of this strange and wonderful series - wackiness notwithstanding - are the often strange and, ideally, wonderful relationships among members of a family.
TOM AND JERRY - SEASON SEVEN
The show makes no attempt to illustrate real-world consequences for such actions, leaving kids without any guidance for appropriate conflict resolution. A light-hearted childrens show... hard to come by nowadays.
THE MILL - SEASON ONE
A simple quality drama with a strong message to convey, British television doesn't get much better than this.
OITNB - SEASON TWO
In Jenji Kohan’s magnificent and thoroughly engrossing new series, Orange Is the New Black, prison is still the pits. But it is also filled with the entire range of human emotion and stories, all of which are brought vividly to life in a world where a stick of gum could ignite either a romance or a death threat.
THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR - SEASON SIX
A classic. While Smith's act is G-rated enough to give rap a good name, the show offers a new and not-so-safe perspective of the so-called "black experience" in America. These are not the Jeffersons. These rich people have their pretentions, but they're no fools.
EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS - SEASON TWO
Blends Rock's signature, whip-smart irreverence with richly humorous, character-driven stories of his own adolescence to create the rare family comedy that is both hilariously honest and filled with heart.
