Ghosted

I was 100% expecting Ghosted to be too stupid to even finish watching an episode.
I was 100% wrong. Ghosted is cute, funny, and totally worth watching.
It's a bit reminiscent of Psych, although its only a half an hour so it has less time
to develop its episode plot and add in interesting clues. So you won't find a brilliant detective show out of Ghosted, but you will get a cute comedy. I'll keep watching it and see where they take it. Fox will probably cancel it, but its a nice half/hour reprieve in midst of 4 1 hour dramas I have on Mondays.

Salvation

This review is based on the pilot for "Salvation" which aired 7/12/17.

Salvation is one of the first new shows of the summer season to start, and honestly, while I enjoyed it, it was a bit underwhelming and I don't see it becoming a huge success. While the subject matter hasn't been done-to-death by TV series, it has been covered at least 2 dozen times by Syfy movies, including a mini-series called Ascension from 2014 which even starred the same actress.

Salvation deals with the threat of an extinction level meteor approaching the earth, and a young college student who is working on a 'totally realistic' map of outer space who discovers it, and then enlists the help of an Elon Musk type tech billionaire to help save the world who just happens to have TV-only sci-fi technology like 3d holograms and a Jarvis like AI in his smart house. Well hey, I personally love Tv-only sci-fi technology like 3D holograms. Heck, they even had it on Crossing Lines, Bones, and Ransom which are not sci-fi shows, so thats sort of just a given at this point. It's the TV industries way of saying to the tech industry, hurry up with those damn 3D hologram projectors already.

Anyway, the characters were bracing cliche, and some of the script was a bit on the nose, and at times it felt sort of like a 2006 campy Syfy movie, but in the end it pulled itself together and actually wasn't half bad. It sort of reminded me of The Event, since Ian Anthony Dale is finally back in a lead role where he belongs. I'll be watching next week and seeing where it goes.

I guess it's also worth mentioning that Jacqueline Byers is in it, and she's a goddess :D

Making History

This review is based on the pilot of "Making History" which aired 3/5/17 at 8:30 on FOX.

Making History has roughly the premise as NBC's Timeless - that is in a nutshell, having fun with a time machine, screwing up history, wishing you'd left well enough alone, and then reluctantly trying to fix your mistakes. the difference being -- Making History is a virtually a parody of timeless, poking fun at history in a most amusing way. It arks the 4 year TV return of Leighton Meester (Surface, 24, Gossip Girl) who makes her comedy debut as a strong, intelligent woman from the 18th century who dreams of the equality her dorky boyfriend from the future (Adam Pally) tells her about.

As someone who is hyper-critical of comedies, I was honestly surprised to like Making History - very pleasantly surprised I must admit. More often than I'd lke, modern comedies take a situational humor "sitcom" approach and Making History does not. Rather, the humor is what I would classify as random humor, most similar to shows like 30 Rock or Family Guy - taking things that are unexpected and absurd and rolling with them as if it were typical.

It is a bit silly, but fresh and fun and I thoroughly enjoyed the pilot.

24: Legacy

24: Legacy is the return of one of the greatest series ever to grace our television sets. Do they still call them sets?

I've seen the first two episodes so far, and I can report that not a single thing has changed from the original. I think its been long enough since the first 24 ended that people who got exhausted of the format could rejoin with fresh eyes. Personally, as a super-fan of the original, I'm glad they didn't try to fix what wasn't broke. Each episode is a self-contained hour and more happens in a single episode of 24 than any other show on TV combined. The action never lets up, its a non-stop, high-octane thrill ride drenched in an epic-ness that outdoes even CBS's Scorpion.

If you love Action, and really fast-paced shows, 24: Legacy is for you.

Westworld

It's good news people.
After seeing both the pilot and the 2nd episode, I can confirm that Westworld is indeed a fantastic show. You don't even need to like Westerns, as I can tell you for certain, I hate westerns. There has never been a single western I've ever liked -- and yet I'm still saying Westworld is a fantastic show. It may have a western setting for parts, but it doesnt play to a western style plot in the least.

Westworld is at its core, a science fiction show, one that deals with the concept of the uncanny valley, much like I, Robot. It is a show about a themepark populated by life-life androids in which the human guests can interact with and do whatever they like in this western themed reflective world. But the androids, which are programmed to forget everything that happens to them, may or may not be becoming slowly cognizant of their imprisoned reality. It's not a new concept, but it has never been done with this budget and level of detail. The show has phenomenal writing, and every scene has a purpose. There are tiny details hidden through each scene, and it very much evokes the feeling of a well-written book. The acting is stellar, and and the mystery is alluring. Westworld is home to many secrets, and they are all ones that we as the audience want to discover -- but not through the eyes of the human guests, rather, through the artificial eyes of the androids.

Highly recommend this show.
Please use caution, there is nudity and sexual content and implied sexual violence, however
nothing in episode 1 or 2 was inherently disturbing.

Lethal Weapon

This review is based on the pilot episode of "Lethal Weapon" which aired 9/27/16

First off, it should be noted I have never seen the movie. It was a little before my time, and I was raised going to the movie theater as opposed to buying VHS and watching them at home, so I've really seen nothing from before 1993 save Jaws and Star Wars. Okay, now that thats out of the way.

Going on, I was not expecting much from this show at all. The trailer looked like it left a lot to be desired, namely, a premise, and my dad's description of the movie as "Just a buddy cop movie" didn't make me very excited.

I was beyond pleasantly surprised.

Lethal Weapon, in spite of being a remake of a movie series is very fresh for television. It's about an older cop who has recently recovered from hearty surgery and needs to keep his heart rate down, and a cop whose wife and daughter were killed and who wants to die himself to be with them. One who wants to live, and plays it safe, and one who wants to die, and is reckless and crazy. Both are good detectives. So there is a premise, but its one that would only work with likeable characters who we want to learn more about; and I can say that after seeing the pilot, both characters are indeed very likable, and I would like to learn more about them.

The pilot was full of action, and not your typical run of the mill shootouts, but calculated decisions, high-speed chases, explosions, and things that took some creativity to write up. The dialogue was smart, but not overly witty, and they kept the minor characters such as the lead cops family to a minimum, so as not to bore us with superfluous soap opera scenes.

Overall, it was an extremely strong pilot, and I'd highly recommend it.
4.5 stars.

Rush Hour

This review is based on the Pilot episode which aired 3/31/2016.

Rush Hour is a 60 minute primetime Drama on CBS based on the classic 90s Buddy-cop franchise by the same name starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. The show, stars Jon Foo reprising Chan's character Lee, and Justin Hires as Tucker's Carter.
The show is a re-imagining of the movies and as such, is based on a premise and its characters rather than a plot. So clearly, the show will be procedural and focus on the chemistry between the characters and the humorous situations they encounter.

The pilot felt a lot like the movie with Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, Ride Along. It wasn't bad, but you wouldn't go to theaters to see it. Rush Hour the movie was phenomenal because the jokes were carefully written, very funny, and the action was extremely well choreographed and the stakes, high. As a TV show, all of that is minimized for the small screen. It becomes more of a Beverly Hills Cop/Ride Along rather than the super epic Rush Hour.

Justin Hires is extremely grating. He's sort of like Kevin Hart, without the high-pitched voice, or the funny. He's just straight up annoying. That being said, the writing wasn't bad. His wise-cracks were very Carter-esque and funny, he just didn't deliver them well. Foo as Lee was pretty spot-on.

Overall, I'd definitely give the show more time to polish its act and discover that sweet spot. I think it has the potential to be the next Castle if the cases stay smart and the banter between them just keeps on improving. Otherwise, it could go the route of The Player, which was a great show, but got canceled really quickly.

Childhood's End

Episode 1 of Childhood's End was AWESOME!!!!

So you're taking a premise which has been done a thousand times, most recently with "V" and you're doing it again, why? Well,
theres a big twist that we get at the end of Episode 1 and it totally through me for a loop. I did NOT see that coming.

The two hour premiere flew by and I was intrigued the whole way through. I suspect you will be too. Give it a try.

Limitless

Last season we saw some pretty flawless pilots, (Stitchers, Zoo, Complications) to name a few. This season literally started on Monday and I've already seen 3 flawless pilots! And perhaps the best of them, is Limitless, based on the 2011 movie by the same name starring Bradley Cooper.

Well, fans of Limitless, Bradley Cooper ... is actually in this show! Reprising his role. I thought that was pretty effing cool. So, if you saw the movie Limitless, you probably thought -- what a fantastic concept, but this movie was a letdown. Or maybe you liked it. But it could have been a lot better. Well, someone had the genius idea to turn it into a procedural TV drama, a format which I believe would have worked much better for the premise from the get go.

Limitless introduces us to a new character, a down on his luck musician and overall nice guy, who is given the NZT drug which, while he's on it,
effectively makes him Lucy, without all the crazy super powers. If you ever saw that show from 10 years ago "John Doe" he's kind of like that. His brain remembers everything its ever experienced, like Mike in Suits, only, instead of using it to pass the bar, he's going to use it to solve crimes and do awesome parkour, and make everyone after him think, how the actual fuc* did this slippery bastard just do that? Its a great concept, hes a really likeable character, and the acting is great. He plays the role of someone who can easily come off as cocky or arrogant with his skillset, but he doesnt. He comes off as someone you actually respect and want to root for. Limitless is fast paced, well-narrated, clever, and really enjoyable.

And best of all, they filmed it in my Building :). I have the screenshot to proove it. Bwahaha.

Go watch this show.

Dominion

Season 2 of Dominion premiered last night and I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised. The episode starts off with some fantastic action choreography and I was easily able to recall everything that happened in the previous season. Characters are given new roles this season, with much more responsibilities than the last, with much higher stakes -- giving season 2 a more epic feeling, which is their intention with Dominion. Overall, I felt that the episode moved at a quick and intense pace and a very cool new direction. I was not a big fan of S1, and I got to say, S2 is looking bright.
