Colony

This review is based on the Pilot of Colony which aired Thursday, January 14th, 2016.

Colony, before anything else is a show about family. This can mean many things. It COULD mean a ton of pointless scenes about lesser family members we don't care about Circa Fear the Walking Dead. Or it could mean that we can connect with, and understand what motivates the protagonist Sully (Josh Halloway, Lost, Intelligence) better. Hopefully its the latter. What makes this show interesting at any given time is that both Sully and his wife (Sarah Wayne Callies) are on opposite sides of a conflict and want different things, while at the same time, they both just want to do whats best for their family. So with this alone, Colony has perpetual conflict at both a global, and character based level, and that is very good for a show. Further, Colony's Pilot shows us a unique alternate universe in which California is under Military Quarantine and divided into Berlin-esque zones divided by giant walls (like District B13, In Time, etc). The walls are policed by hovering battle drones and decked out military vehicles. Colony is one of USA Networks first Science Fiction shows, so its success may be very important to determine the future of the genre on this network, and based on the Pilot, I think the show has what it takes to make it.

Update:

Season 1 of Colony was boring. It's sort of like if they decided to make a show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and never once referenced anything marvel. Colony is a show about alien occupation of LA, with no aliens, no action, no conspiracy, no nothing. It was so barren and pointless and no matter how much I wanted to like it, I just couldn't.

Now we have season 2, and it was perhaps one of the worst premieres I've ever seen. The narrative jumped around without filling gaps -- characters literally teleported because we never saw any mention of them changing locations. No aliens, not really. A little bit happened, but it was mixed in with a bunch of nothing and I may very well have to give up on this show.

Heroes Reborn

Heroes, the only American live action TV series to feel like an anime-come to life returns, and its back with even more character-driven, cryptic, super-powered intensity. Heroes is a character driven show, but it also boasts a well-thought-out plot, putting it leagues ahead of shows that are driven by one or the other exclusively. Heroes feels vert much like a novel, or an anime -- but its live action, and its awesome. Forgive me, I'm a big heroes dork.

The pilot for Heroes Reborn reintroduces us to some beloved characters from the original heroes, some even taking large roles in this sequel. (not a reboot!)
Once again, like the original, we are introduced to a series of characters with powers (called evos in the show) and their journeys as the ultimately come together ... to save the world. Yes, thats right -- save the world. That means Heroes Reborn will be super epic. It reminded me a lot of PSN's Powers. It wss a bit confusing and took 2 hours for all the pieces to sort of come together, but overall I'd say it was a pretty good pilot. I am very excited by the trailer for "This season on Heroes Reborn." I can't wait for next Thursday!

Killjoys

For the first time in years Syfy once again has 3 shows on in the same night. Out Friday line up is Defiance, Killjoys and Darkmatter. And unlike previous Syfy nights, all three of these shows involve space and spaceships, and laser guns, and are very, very futuristic. It's a great night for Syfy fans and Killjoys may just be the best of the bunch.

Killjoys is a fast paced, fun show starring Syfy favorite Aaron Ashmore and a new girl, the very sexy Hannah John-Kamen as "killjoys" essentially intergalactic bounty hunters that work for a mysterious corporation known as "the Rack." The dialog is fast and witty, the action is speedy and intense, the settings leave a little hint of budget constraints but they do a great job for what they have. The show is a lot of fun and I think fans of Firefly will really like it.

The Messengers

With some shows you can tell right off the bat, from the pilot how good they will be. The Messengers is not one of those shows.

The pilot was o-kay. It started out quite random, but tied together various characters for reasons unknown and introduced a potential series villain who didn't actually do anything villainous. In the previews for the season, we're presented with a boatload of new and vital information that would have been great to learn during the actual episode and would have made things a lot more interesting. I suspect the Messengers will pick up next week and continue to get better, but the pilot left quite a bit to be desired.

At this point - if you're pressed for shows, give it a whirl, otherwise, you'd be better off waiting to watch this one after its 1st season completed so that you can watch multiple episodes consecutively and get the full message.

While extremely unclear in the pilot, the show is about some sort of devil entity having appeared on earth and a handful of chosen people granted power to warn the world of his coming. Very, very uncler. But that's the gist.

iZombie

Izombie is what we have been waiting for -- for a long time. For fans of Tru Calling, since 2005, and for fans of Pushing Daisies, since 2009. Izombie brings to life once again the phenomenal premise made popular by those two earlier series -- and its writing could not be any better.

Izombie, based off a comic series by the same title follows the life of Liv (Rose McIver), a promising med-student whose life ends when she is scratched on a boat party during a spontaneous and isolated zombie outbreak.

Having escaped with her life, or, some of it -- Liv lives (pun not intended) on, masquerading her suspended status from her friends and family. She takes up a job as a Mortician to try and learn as much as she can about her condition.

While hiding out and working as a mortician, liv inadvertently becomes involved in a case regarding a Jane Doe that was just brought in. She discovers for the first time since the incident that she might have something to offer and to live for after all.

Its too early to tell if Izombie will be procedural or serial, but I'm getting the sense that it will follow a case-per-week format with serialized elements as she uncovers the truth about the virus.

I hope you enjoy the pilot as much as I did. It was possibly the best pilot I've seen since Person of Interest.

One Big Happy

I'm extremely critical of modern comedies. The word Sitcom, made from Situational and Comedy really says it all. I don't like situational humor. For me, it kind circumvents what humor is all about. Rather than having a situation and commenting about it in a witty or sarcastic way -- have interesting situations with characters we like, have a story even, and have it be funny because the characters are just really funny people -- like Veep. A one of a kind comedy that uses wordplay for humor rather than situations.

Keeping my opinions on comedies in mind -- I found the pilot for One big Happy to be -- hysterical. I was literally laughing the entire way through. It was ... sort of a sitcom -- but they really did an excellent and original job with the jokes. I really got the scene that all three of the main characters were hilarious people.

For example -- Lizzy says to Prudence, "Luke is the father!" and prudence retorts, "No, Darth Vader is the father."

Thats just plain funny and came out of left field.

I have high hopes for this series now after having watched the pilot. And then there's always the fact that Elisha Cuthbert and her jawline is one of the most attractive people on the planet.

Powers

Heroes + Watchmen = Powers

Show INFO:
Powers is a new procedural crime drama exclusive to the Playstation Network. (This is not a TV network, it is only accessible with a Sony Playstation 3 or 4) The first episode can be watched for free. It is not torrentable. It releases new episodes every Tuesday.

Show Description:
Powers, based of the Comic series by the same name follows the narrative of one Christian Walker (Sharlto Copley), former superhero, lost his powers, turned cop. Because of Walker's unique expertise into the psyche of 'Powers', he is an invaluable asset to the FBI's Powers division, which, without him, is not terribly effective at keeping rogue powers in check. The series follows a procedural case-per-week format, with serial elements, including a caged supervillain Wolfe (Eddie Izzard) who might as well be reprising his role in NBC's Hannibal.

Review:
Powers is dark, gritty, and stylized, but not nearly to the same degree as Sin City. It is much more like Watchmen, only, modern, and rather than there just being heroes and villains, regular citizens also can have powers.

The show works in much the same way as things would without superpowers with organized crime, illegal drugs and murder -- but the addition of superpowers makes things a whole lot cooler, and a whole lot more complicated. It is a very appropriate series for Playstation Network, as it could easily be mistaken for videogame series like inFamous or Prototype.

So far, (3 episodes have aired) the characters are growing on me, and I feel like they have a lot of depth that can be further explored. I'm really liking the serial elements and hoping they take precedent to the procedural as the show goes forward. While the world and circumstance is very much like NBC's Heroes, it does not jump between various characters like Heroes did, rather it focuses on Christian Walker, the powers division and the villain of the week. It's definitely worth watching, but it is NOT worth buying a playstation for.

Season 2 Review;

Season 2 does NOT disappoint. Each episode feels like a movie as we watch the team attempt to unravel the mysteries behind a mysterious island cult, a disturbing zombie-esque virus and where Alan has been for the past year. He's been accused of bombing Ilaria in London and has several international arrest warrents out for him! Helix airs Fridays at 10:00 on Syfy. Do not miss that awesome epic Syfy event that will make you wish it was next Friday the second it ends.

Star Trek: Discovery

Hey guys. I'm too lazy to write a full review, but I'll give you my unorganized thoughts.

Star Trek: Discovery is by no means original in any capacity. We've seen this plot thousands of times, and yet -- by the end of the first episode I found myself enthralled -- totally drawn in and engaged with the situation and the characters. There's something about the production value and the colors that really enhance the epicness of the drama.

So far the only character we've really explored is the lead, Michael. She's a bit stiff, but thats to be expected from one who was raised by Vulcans. Hah, the way I worded that sounds like, raised by wolves. Anyway, I hope that her character arc is a bit more original than just "rediscovering the value of human emotion." The acting seemed very good. Its cool to have Doug Jones in a TV show, but his character didn't have much personality either. I think the show just needs some time to come into itself, but overall, I loved the vibe and its going to be a fantastic adventure. Check it out!

Marvel's The Defenders

It's hard for me to not give a show like this 5 stars. Part of me wants to just because i really enjoyed it and it had swaths of fantastic fight scenes ... but alas, this show had far too many problems for me to give it more than 3 and a half.

For starters, Episodes 1-2 were utterly worthless. The "Defenders" don't even meet each other until episode 3, which is also considerably boring. The plot of the show and the way they are thrown together works only in the weakest sense of plot weaving, and didn't feel like it was planned years in advance when they first announced this show. Jessica Jones is a really unlikable character. She was self-loathing and bitter in her own show, and pessimistic and annoying in this one. Iron Fist is hilariously corny, but he can also be kind of annoying too. For me, I felt that Daredevil was the best part of the Defenders, and could even have done without the other 3.

Ultimately, the defenders is a show all about solving things with violence, led by a team of vigilantes who hate using violence, and when they don't have fun, neither to we. The Hand, as the criminal organization felt really loose and hard to believe. They could've done a much better job making the organization feel authentic and not like 5 random people from a comic book running an organization that doesn't do anything.

The little surprise in the 7th episode was great, and then quickly undermined when Iron Fist was the only one to notice it. That was a let down.

Overall ... Its a mess of a show, but its got good fight scenes and its worth watching.
Its not the Defenders I wanted it to be, or that it could have been, but i'm satisfied enough with what they gave us.
