TV ratings: Super Bowl XLVI close to a record in early returns

The Super Bowl may not quite set a ratings record for the third straight year -- but it could come awfully close.Metered-market ratings for Super Bowl XLVI show the game scoring a 47.8 rating/71 share in Nielsen's metered-market ratings, which for live broadcasts are sometimes a better indicator of the audience than the fast national ratings, which are below. That's just a tenth of a point behind the last two Super Bowls, which are the No. 1 and No. 2 telecasts in U.S. television history.Following the game, the premiere of "The Voice" scored a 19.4/33 in the metered markets, considerably better than FOX's broadcast of "Glee" (15.3/27) last year.... //

TV ratings: Packers-Bears scores big on Christmas for NBC

Fast National ratings for Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011While the other networks settled in for a long winter's nap on Christmas night, NBC and "Sunday Night Football" dominated the ratings with a matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears.NBC averaged 17.8 million viewers and 9.3 rating/19 share in households Sunday evening. Those numbers will change some because of the live "SNF" telecast, but the Peacock beat the combined totals for the other three networks on the night. CBS (5.4 million, 3.4/7) came in second, a little ahead of ABC (4.8 million, 2.6/5). FOX trailed with just 1.8 million viewers and a 1.1/2.NBC was similarly dominant in the adults 18-49 demographic, scoring a 5.5 rating. ABC drew a 1.7 to finish second, while neither CBS (0.8) nor FOX (0.7) broke the 1.0 mark.... //

60 Minutes  explored the many sides to Apple co-founder  Steve Jobs  in a two-part interview with his biographer,  Walter Isaacson . The book was initially scheduled for release on Nov. 21, but the date was pushed up soon after Jobs' death on October 24. TV Ratings: Football dominates, but Andy Rooney's final '60 Minutes' draws a crowd

Fast National ratings for Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011.The football is in full swing, and with that, NBC's domination of Sunday ratings continue. The match-up wasn't a terribly tight game between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Jets, but it's still football, and that's often good enough.Perhaps the biggest winner of the night was "60 Minutes" which boasted an audience bump of 6 million viewers over last week, mostly due to the retirement of their famed commentator Andy Rooney. The other interesting story to follow was the performance of ABC's new retro-drama "Pan Am." The show slid from last week's 10.9 million viewers to 7.7 million this week. NBC led the night with 14.6 million viewers and a 8.9 rating/14 share in households. CBS followed with 12.9 million (8.0/13). ABC took third with 7.6 million (4.7/7). FOX was in last with 5.8 million (3.3/5).NBC also led the adults 18-49 demographic, with a 5.9 rating. CBS... //

Andy Rooney ends run as '60 Minutes' regular commentator

After a career with "60 Minutes" that's lasted 43 years, Andy Rooney will end his career this Sunday (Oct. 2) as a regular contributor to the CBS news magazine.Rooney, 92, has been with the show since its inception in 1968 and began his weekly commentary in 1978. Since then, he's given 1,096 essay on everything from coffee to fan mail to the economy. But his 1,097th will be his last weekly musing."There's nobody like Andy and there never will be. He'll hate hearing this, but he's an American original," says Jeff Fager, "60 Minutes" executive producer.The program has been under continual pressure to target a younger audience, which they've been addressing with additions like Byron Pitts, Lara Logan and Anderson Cooper.Questions about Rooney's role emerged after he was absent from his normal end-of-show slot during the show's season premiere on Sunday (Sept. 25). Now it appears Rooney's time with the show is basically over.... //

TV Ratings: NBC's NFL match-up eclipses the Emmys

The 63rd annual Emmy broadcast may have been a hit with the 10 million viewers who tuned in for all or part of the show, but the TV love-fest was utterly crushed by NBC's Sunday night football matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons. In Emmy's defense, the game was of particular interest because it marked quarterback Michael Vick's return to his old home town for the first time since he was fired by the Falcons in the wake of that whole dog-fighting scandal.The Eagles/Falcons game drew 17.8 million viewers with a 10.9 rating/17 share for the night. FOX's Emmy broadcast trailed way behind with 10.3 million viewers (6.4/10). We should also point out that Emmy's numbers were down from last year, too -- when the broadcast drew 13.5 million viewers. CBS' came in third with 8.7 million (5.6/9), while ABC finished last with 5.1 million viewers (3.3/5).It's no surprise that football also... //

Sunday evening's watching was totally dominated by NBC's "Football Night in America" match-up between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Jets.NBC averaged 19 million viewers and an 11.4 rating, 18 share in primetime households, more than double the totals logged by every other network. CBS (9.3 million, 5.9/9) was a distant second with a night of 9/11 memorial programming. FOX (7.3, 4.3/7) and ABC (4.8 million, 3.1/5) trailed with re-runs and more 9/11-related programming, respectively.NBC and football, not surprisingly, dominated the 18-49 demographic with a 7.8 rating.... //
