American Experience is PBS' longest-running tv documentary series, highlighting American historical events and figures. Popular and incredibly far-reaching, the show has covered every imaginable facet of the American experience, from the Civil-Rights struggles of African Americans and the lives of Presidents, to the history of Tupperware. Praised for its ability to shed light on lesser-known historical events, American Experience has earned over 240 broadcast awards in its 20-odd year run. Titled originally as The American Experience, the show has a large online presence, and often pairs its programs with websites providing more details on historical events featured on the show.

The 1904-1914 construction of the Panama Canal, the 50-mile link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, is recalled via archival footage, photos and interviews with workers, as well as insights from historians. The undertaking cost the U.S. about $375 million and 5609 workers (out of 56,307), who perished from both accidents and disease. The documentary also explores what life was like for the workers, who were a mix of Americans, Europeans and West Indians.
