The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of September 12, 2016

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   American Horror Story (Season Premiere) Wednesday at 10 p.m. on FX Why: Ryan Murphy and FX have been more secretive than ever this year, rolling out creepy and confusing posters and teasers that are meant to misdirect fans. How… fun? There are more than 20 official teasers for Season 6, but only one actually pertains to this year's story, according to FX CEO John Landgraf. Some media outlets have jumped on The Mist as this season's title. Among the other possibilities: The Visitors , which features Signs -style crop circles, and Baby Face , which focuses on one of these terrifying dolls that smell like cigarette smoke and sadness. Casting is slightly less mysterious: Coming back for more fun is the incredibly talented Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Angela Bassett, plus new Murphy regular Cuba Gooding Jr. Oh, and "Golden Globe-winning actress Lady Gaga." Because that's a thing. Prepare to talk about: Whether there's a connection to one or several of the previous seasons; how FX pulled this off.   High Maintenance (Series Premiere) Friday at 11 p.m. on HBO Why: After three years as a web series, High Maintenance has been called up to the big leagues. Like, the biggest league. Not only is HBO airing six new 30-minute episodes, the network also is moving the 19 original webisodes from Vimeo to HBO GO/NOW and showing them on HBO Comedy. Created by the married duo of Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld (an Emmy-winning casting director for 30 Rock ), who wrote, directed, and appear in these new episodes, the show follows a nameless pot dealer as he makes his deliveries. The premise is tight, allowing viewers to get invested in "The Guy" while also opening up a diverse mix of storylines by segueing into the lives of the customers. Among this season's guests are Oscar nominee Amy Ryan, Orange is the New Black standout Yael Stone, and Inside Amy Schumer scene-stealer Greta Lee. Prepare to talk about: How rad it would be if Ilana Wexler and Abbi Abrams showed up; how you totally should have followed through with that idea you had for a web series back in '09.   68th Emmy Awards Sunday at 7 p.m. on ABC Why: There are two types of people in this world: winners and losers. The Primetime Emmys gives us another opportunity to raise some people up while tearing others down. This is especially fun when the broken-hearted losers are celebrities. Admittedly, the Emmys have seemed out of step for some time now, rewarding familiar mediocrity ( Modern Family ) over daring originality ( Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ). But there's just nothing like taking home an Emmy. You're never going to introduce someone in a trailer as a "Critics' Choice Award winner." This year's exercise in frustration will be hosted by late-night TV's second-favorite Jimmy: Kimmel. Presenters include nominees Kit Harington, Keri Russell, and Kerry Washington, plus at least one person whose name doesn't start with a K: Teen Choice Award winner Mandy Moore. (See? It doesn't work.) Prepare to talk about: How awards don't matter, especially not the out-of-touch Emmys, but how you're horrified about your fave leaving empty-handed; who got left out of the "In Memoriam" segment.   T.J. Typically around this time of year, fans of American Horror Story already know the general theme of the forthcoming season.
