'American Idol' interview: Amber Holcomb on her hopes for a comeback in Motown week

Last week, Amber Holcomb found herself in the bottom two after the Top 9 performances of "American Idol." She needed a comeback to get past that disappointment.Motown week may have provided that: Both Amber's solo and her trio were praised by the judges. We talked to Amber after the show to see how she was feeling.Mostly, Amber seemed to be pretty excited about a new week on "Idol" -- a big change from the week before. "The first night, I was like, 'Oh my God! I'm gonna go home next week! Everybody hates me!'" the singer said of last week's results. "But as the days went on, I was like, 'Okay, you're still here. Get it together.' But that night, when they went to take pictures, I didn't smile. I was sad."It was all the more exciting for Amber when, this week, she received some of the most positive feedback of the night from... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/03/american-idol-interview-amber-holcomb-on-her-hopes-for-a-comeback-in-motown-week.html

'American Idol' interview: How Janelle Arthur brought country to Motown

Janelle Arthur's night didn't start off too great during "American Idol" Motown week. She was singled out for criticism in her Madonna duet with Kree Harrison. And then the country singer was expected to sing a style quite far from her own only minutes later.Fortunately for Janelle, she completely rocked her Motown-made-country.When we spoke to Janelle after the show, she mostly seemed relieved to have made it through some performances that had scared her. "I feel relieved that I got through it," she said. "I was able to not let anyone stop me from doing my thing. I mean, as if I wasn't under enough pressure, playing my guitar for the first time! And then having to deal with the comments before... It really felt good just to get through it."As for her solo performance itself, Janelle sang her own arrangement of The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On," accompanying herself on guitar. 'American Idol' interviews: Burnell Taylor, Devin Velez and Lazaro Arbos respond to Motown week criticism

Motown week proved to be tough for the Top 8 singers on "American Idol" Season 16. Nowhere was this more evident than in the guys' group performance. The flawed performance of "Can't Help Myself" by Burnell Taylor, Devin Velez and Lazaro Arbos was criticized by the judges (particularly Nicki Minaj). In addition to this, the first hints of competition were seen as each guy tried to defend himself. The result was kind of a mess and a distinctly negative point in the night. What did the guys have to say for themselves after the show? Although each was a bit indignant at the specific criticism, admissions of imperfection were made.Impressively, none of the guys were ready to knock down any of the others. Each instead pointed out what he had done right. "Our group performance wasn't so great," Devin quickly admitted after the show. "It was harsh. But my thing is, you should never be... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/03/american-idol-interviews-burnell-taylor-devin-velez-and-lazaro-arbos-respond-to-motown-week-criticis.html

'American Idol': Amber Holcomb's 'Lately' is the best vocal on the night

Amber Holcomb - Lately - American Idol 12 (Top 8) by IdolxMuzicFor "American Idol's" Detroit music week, Amber Holcomb chose Stevie Wonder's "Lately" and she absolutely had the best vocal on the night -- which is saying a lot, because the girls were really strong this week. She was so good, in fact, that Mariah Carey had to be bleeped out in her exuberance. "That was a tour de force. Tour de force! [bleeeeeeep] It was impeccable," says Carey. Heee.Keith Urban adds, "You picked the right song, you sang it beautifully, you felt it beautifully. You have this way of laying in a song that is mesmerizing" and Nick says that God was showing off when he created Amber's vocal cords. We also agree with Randy's assessment that it was the best vocal of the night. 'American Idol' Top 8: Angie Miller stumbles, but the rest of the girls are very strong

It's Detroit night on "American Idol," which is a great theme. However, so was the Beatles and we all know how that turned out. It's interesting that it's not limited to Motown -- so should we expect some Kid Rock and Eminem, then?Smokey Robinson is the mentor this week. He's fantastic, though dude needs to lay off the nips and tucks. Also, Smokey always takes us back to this nightmare fuel from our childhood. Totally scared the crap out of us.1. Candice Glover, "Heard it Through the Grapevine," Marvin GayeShe's putting a bluesy spin on a very iconic Motown song, so hopefully it works. The opening few bars are fantastic -- the saxophone and her big, throaty voice. Then when the tempo kicks up, it's just very .... cool. Just smooth and hep cat and sexy, we love the way she effortlessly goes up into her upper register at moments. An interesting arrangement, to be... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/03/american-idol-top-8-angie-miller-stumbles-but-the-rest-of-the-girls-are-very-strong.html

'American Idol': Candice Glover, Angie Miller and Amber Holcomb trio is hashtag pow, indeed

Amber, Candice & Angie - I'm Going To Make You... by IdolxMuzicFor their forced group performance of "American Idol's" Detroit music week, Candice Glover, Amber Holcomb and Angie Miller got "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" by Diana Ross and the Supremes. Before they performed, they were asked which one of them is Diana and they said they are all Diana. And they were not lying. It was awesome. We are ready for them to be a girl group and take the world by storm. They sounded absolutely terrific together, but all their individual parts were also awesome. We definitely thought they were the best group of the night (not that that bar is set particularly high in this instance).Mariah says, "Hashtag pow. I loved it. I heard all of your voices individually when you would take the moments ... A plus mazing. Amazing."What did you think, "Idol" fans?... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/03/american-idol-candice-glover-angie-miller-and-amber-holcomb-trio-is-hashtag-pow-indeed.html

'American Idol': Janelle Arthur kills it on 'Keep Me Hangin' On'

Janelle Arthur - Keep Me Hanging On - American... by IdolxMuzicJanelle Arthur just announced her "American Idol" presence with authority. She balled up her fist, reached way back and asserted herself on "Keep Me Hangin' On" by Diana Ross. The girl took a total 60s-girl-group song and arranged in a way that made the lyrics utterly heartbreaking. It sounded like a completely different song -- it sounded like a country hit Janelle could release tomorrow. Girlfriend is in it. The judges were similarly excited. Mariah says it was "Janelle at her finest," while Keith calls it "beautiful." Randy sums it up best with, "I absolutely loved it, I thought it was incredible. What I loved the most ... we have all of these other girls who are coming on and doing their thing, but watch out for Janelle, y'all. She's in it to win it."Definitely. Incredible. We can't wait to download it. What did you... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/03/american-idol-janelle-arthur-kills-it-on-keep-me-hangin-on.html

'American Idol' Top 8: Janelle Arthur and Kree Harrison duet on Madonna's 'Like a Prayer'

If you want to have fun on a stage, Madonna is always a good choice. Janelle Arthur and Kree Harrison of "American Idol" Season 16 made that choice when they performed a duet of "Like a Prayer" during Motown Week.Yes, Madonna counts. She is from Detroit, British accent notwithstanding. The song itself was hardly perfect, but it sure was a lot of fun. There was the slightest bit of country inserted into the pop song, but Kree and Janelle mostly stayed true to the original. And they were obviously having a great time with it. As more than one of the judges pointed out, both girls were there to help each other get through the song without problems.Of the two singers, Kree got a little more of the praise. Nicki Minaj, in particular, seemed to think that Kree was the one carrying the song. "Kreedom almost made it look like she flew in to do a... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/03/american-idol-top-8-janelle-arthur-and-kree-harrison-duet-on-madonnas-like-a-prayer.html

Nicki Minaj: There's "Absolutely Not a Chance" for a Guy to Win American Idol

Nicki Minaj says she had no idea what to expect when she signed on to be a judge on American Idol this season, but she did have an inkling about one thing. "I felt like, 'Okay. I know everybody's just going to hate me,'" Minaj admitted on a conference call with reporters this week. Her response?
