Baby Steps Season 2 Episode #08 Anime Review

While tournament material can be problematic in general with a lot of series, it’s something that has a better chance of succeeding in the sports anime world, depending on presentation. Baby Steps has given us a slow, steady and well done realistic approach for Eiichiro’s growth, and becoming invested in him has been very easy, which makes it even easier to truly rally behind him as he progresses. With the new tournament underway, seeing the changes in him as a player – and socially – after the first season and his time in the Florida training camp just reinforces him as a character in a great way. While one may not get wholly invested in the movements of the sport, it’s very easy to be drawn in by what Eiichiro does and seeing him work through the challenges. The opening half of this match is a solid one as we see Eiichiro really working things well against Miyagawa, but also struggling with the differences between them and Miyagawa’s own growth, which is proving to be challenging. Eiichiro’s view of the game, and his narration, makes it accessible to be sure, but seeing his determination and intensity coming into play is another piece of his growth that really works well, as he’s not questioning himself at this point but rather playing with a plan and intent to win. So when he makes the right hits, he’s getting caught up in it in the right way and it’s a matter of self-encouragement that visually can wear down an opponent. Eiichiro doesn’t look cocky, but he instead looks confident and capable. The first half works through the match well with its ups and downs, and the commentary that continues to reinforce the way Eiichiro has grown, but also that Miyagawa is really pushing him.
