The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of August 31, 2015

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed—or at least be able to fake it—with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   Awkward. (Season Premiere) Monday at 9:00pm on MTV Why: Because Jenna's getting school canceled! You hate school! Just kidding; my roommate's a teacher, so I can't say that. Anyway, yes, Jenna will play a prank and get school canceled and become super popular — which is weird, because she's AWKWARD, right? Like the title of the show. Prepare to talk about: How awkward you are/were in high school; whether pranks are ever as cool as they are on TV; how you're supposed to be in school to LEARN, not play pranks.     Big Blue Live (Special Event) Mon., Tues., and Wed. at 8:00pm on PBS Why: I'll level with you: there isn't much on this week! We're in the TV season doldrums where the good summer stuff is over and the new fall shows haven't yet started and everything (television, life) just SUCKS. Normally, this glorified live camera feed of sea animals off the Pacific coast would not make this list, but hey, sea otters and sea lions are cute, and whales are definitely a thing and so whatever! Animals are great. Prepare to talk about: Your favorite west coast marine mammal (if it's not the sea lion, I just can't even with you); your favorite marine non-mammal (sharks, this is one of your many moments to shine); how you really wanted to be a veterinarian when you grew up, but you're almost certainly not one.   Difficult People Wednesday at 12:00am on Hulu Why: Again, in a normal week, this wouldn't make the list, however, be glad this isn't a normal week, because this show is terrific, and it just got picked up for a second season. It's like if the lesson you learned from Curb Your Enthusiasm was that Larry David isn't unlikeable enough . Also, it stars Julie Klausner (love her) and Billy Eichner (love him) as people who are known for being mean to celebrities on the internet (love relatability). Please binge watch this show! Prepare to talk about: How different you think Julie and Billy's characters are from their real life personalities; whether you'd have made that Blue Ivy joke; how badly you want to be friends with Julie and Billy IRL.     Leah E.
