What a shame! The season 3 finale was great and now we won't find out what happens after the cliffhanger. I hear the showrunner just needed two ore seasons to finish the show and had it all planned out, pity we won't see how it would've played out :(

I don't see why? It took a while but it grew on me and now they wanna cancel it? It is a shame.
But then again, I wonder would it still be interesting in two more season?

So mad right now. This last season was amazing. The finale had me on the edge of my seat. Hoping this cancellation becomes a renewal for at least a 6 episode season to end it the right way.

I liked this season better than the first, but I wondered if they were writing themselves into a corner (and/or opening too many different plot threads). Bummer. I liked this "Syfy"[sic] Fridays pairing.
(P.S. Don't tell anyone, but Syfy did renew Killjoys for 2 more seasons, then it's done.)

I am legitimately shocked-- this was an excellent show, and ended without any kind of closure. What a disservice to the fans. At least do a mini series/movie to close it out.

Seriously hoping they don't do the same with Killjoys, as the season finale is tonight.

I started out liking Dark Matter more than Killjoys their first seasons, but I couldn't get through this season. I would start getting invested in a character and they would leave the show or change dramatically. The future #5 was too silly for me and I haven't watched since that episode. I hope they can find a replacement that is better. Glad Killjoys was renewed. It really kicked up the comedy this season and is just plain fun.

Killjoys is so much worse than this show, so of course SyFy renewed it.
Caprica, SGU, now this; starting to sense a pattern: if something is better than teenager-level mentality, they've overshot their demographic marketshare and kill it.
SyFy: the WB, but with lasers.

i really, really enjoyed this show. while there were a few episodes in the past two seasons that didn't quite life up to it, i always enjoyed the setting, characterisation and so much more. finally characters that grew and changed-- not always for the better, which was just refreshing to watch and isn't always a given with many other shows.

i will miss it dearly.

Although Am not 100 surprised but kinda bummed out as it was kinda picking up with more meat added to it in the third season, towards end it was going a wee bit overboard but still was well under control !

Like someone has said above Killjoys is much worse and they've renewed that and not this is indeed a shame.

At first glace, one might think that Syfy was the perfect network for a show like Dark Matter, a return-to-the-classic space science-fiction drama set in outer space in a future governed by intergalactic, independent corporations. And from the outside, without delving into the show itself, by this description alone, I would agree. By this alone, its easy to see why Dark Matter and Syfy would be a perfect fit. However, I don't think this was actually the case. Syfy, for all the good shows it brings us, is a fairly shallow network when it comes to depth of writing. It gives us shows that are quintessentially science fiction on the outside, but tend be hollow when it comes to thought-provoking concepts and writing that really makes you think. Every now and then you get a truly compelling show on Syfy, that more than just takes place in a futuristic setting, but also raises the questions integral to the real genre of science-fiction, the kinds of questions asked in award-winning books by authors like Gaiman, Card, or Asimov. But I don't think Syfy realized what it actually had with Dark Matter. Its possible that airing in a block with Killjoys and Wynnona Earp, good, fun but undeniably simpler shows, confused the execs to the fact that Dark Matter had some of the most masterful writing on TV and went so much further than just a cookie-cutter outline of a space drama. Whereas Killjoys is about quirky bounty hunters in space, and evil aliens, Dark Matter was about the human psyche. You had a cast of Six different protagonists, and yet Dark Matter managed to tell all of their stories at once, while also having a fantastic central plot. Each of the characters in Dark Matter vaguely fit into a different archetype of human personality -- and when you remove their memories, you open up a world of such possibilities, for these actors to invent the characters based on the archtype, without knowing who they were in the past. It raised phenomenal questions such as, "Who are we at our core?", "Do our experiences define us?", "How can we make the decisions we tend to make, when we don't know what decisions we've made in the past?" The characters in dark matter didnd't know who they were ... but they knew what the felt, and what they believed they stood for. There have been a handful of shows focusing simultaneously on on such diverse casts as Dark Matter, off the top of my head ... Heroes, The 4400, and maybe Continuum, to an extent. - Each of these shows focused heavily on the characters, while the main story didn't necessarily take a backseat, but was not the driving factor of the show. However none of these shows had the same depth as Dark Matter ... the writing just wasn't as good. In dark matter, since each of the six protagonists have such core and relatable emotions, you can identify with each of them. As humans, we have multifaceted personalities, and so, we saw a little bit of ourselves in each of the characters. You didn't get that with Heroes, or the 4400, even though there were a lot of characters. Dark Matter was a show about the potential and possibilities humanity, and I can't think of anything more science fiction than that.

Season 3 of Dark Matter is set to be released on Netflix in mid September. I highly recommend that you watch it if you have not seen it on TV. Netflix has been known to pick up canceled shows in the past, and while they are about $20M in debt right now, I imagine they could probably afford the budget of Dark Matter ... So ... go watch that shit.

That's the beautiful thing with Sci-Fi, there are different sub-genres that appeal to many different types of viewers. There's drama, action, fantasy, horror and comedy and I'm sure I'm missing a few. It isn't the first time the Sy-Fy network angered it's fan base by pulling the plug on a series, think back to SGU (Space Drama) getting axed so that the Sy-Fy network could make room for WWE Wrestling, yes, wrestling. It is what it is, it got pulled, hopefully the better option (Space Drama) the Expanse has a much more longer shelf life. :)

I second the suggestion of Other Space. Besides Joel Hodgson, there's Milana Vayntrub (AT&T commercial, Squirrel Girl), Trace Beaulieu (voice), and Karan Soni (Verizon network guy).

I know this isn’t e place to pick best/worst shows on The “syfy” [sic] Channel, but I think The Expanse is the bee’s knees. Just started the books, and got the board game (area control/influence style gameplay) on preorder.

Sorry to be blunt, but this show had the makings of the next cute classic on par with Firefly. Given it started of slow with rigid and clumsy acting and effects, but it matured nicely after season one.

Unknownfear said it all and said it well. I liked this show. I thought the first season was fine, and I liked the early character development; I thought it was neat how they started making Two resemble a female Captain Kirk by making her a little more promiscuous than expected, while still being a strategic and compassionate leader. They probably wouldn't have gotten cancelled if they kept running with that one and had her Kirk-out on random space station lounge lizards and green dudes every other episode. lol

Seriously, though, I will miss this show. For what looked like a relatively low budget, the production quality was always decent, the writing was really good and the plot arcs were always interesting.

SyFy banned me from their chatroom years ago when I told them they were idiots in less polite terms for cancelling Caprica [and describing the song from the opening credits of Enterprise which they had just picked up in repeats as sounding like a male Celine Dion having an uncomfortable bowel movement, also in less polite terms.] I would say the same to them now about Dark Matter [re: Caprica] if they were listening.

Unknownfear's eulogy was better, but, oh well.

I mean, Dark Matter had some great writing, but honestly it was hobbled by some pretty consistently bad acting from a couple of the leads. Sometimes I couldn't bring myself to watch the latest episode even though I'd watched all of them beforehand.

FWIW, The Expanse is way better. In fact, The Expanse isn't just the best sci-fi/space opera show airing, it's one of the best shows period in a while.

No, Caprica definitely was great, especially relative to the rest of the slop Sy/Fy produces. While it may not have had the mass appeal that the Sharknado franchise has, it had great actors playing complicated characters, a great story, great writing, and great production values. It definitely lacked the formulaic teen appeal of the rest of their WB-lite schedule, and had a few uncomfortable scenes here and there compared to the pablum that seems to get renewed. But yeah, it wasn't popular with enough people apparently, so it got canned. They also continually screwed with the scheduling so people probably missed episodes, which in a show with long story arcs can be crippling, so there's that too.
Always keep in mind too that they have to air something in between the ads, and if it isn't an imperfect good show, it will most likely be the kind of upbeat lowbrow cheese they are famous for. Warehouse 13 and Eureka got renewed easily and they were awful.

Back to Dark Matter though, I doubt Netflix will pick it up as it's not really their type of thing, but who knows. I have read some rumors about a wrap-up movie, but I almost hope they don't bother and just leave it on a high note. Again, compared to the kind of crap they regularly produce at the Vancouver rubber-suit factory, it's still hard to believe it got dropped, but if they can't tell the difference between the good and the bad, then it's probably more surprising that it ever got produced at all.

In other news, that show The Orville is really, really bad. I wouldn't be surprised if it got cancelled before the end of the season, which probably means it will get renewed for two more.

They seem to like pissing us Scifi fans off, cancelling good shows and keeping garbage! They binned Almost Human too before and that was good...and yes KILLJOYS SUCKS!!!!

Such great character development. I am truly disappointed. This was the next Firefly! I wouldn't be that surprised if there was a cult following to push for a movie. But why is Killjoys still going??????

I have been impressed with the fan reaction to this cancellation, here and elsewhere. The ratings were right up there with Killjoys (slightly higher at the end, fwiw). Still, it looks like The "syfy" Channel surprised and/or angered more people than they realized.

Sadly creator Joseph Mallozzi just confirmed that any renewal is now dead, ultimately due to existing contracts. (Several serious offers had been made, per his blog at http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/) Apparently now the only possible continuation is in comic book form, but that effort is only at the "initial conversation" stage. :-(

This is more sad!! And kind of unbelievable...Why because a contract that is no more the show can be renew?? Is something in the "rights" that forbid to have a continuation? If is a show you don't want anymore Why don't let it lose??

I bought the trade (paperback of combined comic issues) of Dark Matter when the show first started. Often even reading the original comic books can give added insight, like reading the original novel something is based on. This one wasn't, sad to say. At least a new comic series would be different, based on the TV series, but a comic book publication is slower, and may take several issues (1 per month or longer) to equal an episode.

Also, Mallozzi didn't say what the contract issue was. It could have been a studio thing, or an actor(s) thing, or something else. It could also be contracts of new projects (series and movies) making the cast unavailable. Many of the actors seem quite busy recently per IMDB.
