Review of Empire

Tuesdays, 9:00 PM ET on FOX

60 minutes

Empire is described as a unique family drama set in the world of a hip-hop empire. It centers on Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard), a charismatic, savvy music superstar who is about to take his company, Empire Entertainment, public. Raised on the streets, he has never backed away from a fight and will resort to any measures, fair or foul, to defend his beloved Empire.

After watching the pilot i was on the fence. I thought it was over the top, but there was enough there to get me to watch the next episode, and the next, and so on, until I was 100% on board the crazy/soapy/black version of 80s nighttime soaps like Dynasty and Falcon Crest. Now fast forward to season 2 and it has lost some of its magic. Why? Because I think the first episode of season 2 was simply them cramming every possible plot device into 42 minutes of airtime sans commercials. While it hasn't been as good as season 1, it is still entertaining and the same way my family sat around to watch Dallas, Dynasty, and Falcon Crest, they now sit around and watch Empire because it is this over the top soapy drama with a bit of "Oh my goodness, did they really just say that?" comedy thrown in. My only wish: stop the auto tune.
