This series was recommended to me and I honestly didn't think I'd watch it past it's pilot as I'm not really into R&B/HipHop. But this show really surprised me! You'd obviously expect a show starring Terrence and Taraji to be good but I never expected it to have this quality to it.
The show has a sense of realness. I love that the characters have dimensions and layers. They're not all good/ bad. There is no villain or hero really. And the characters are strong and well established. I love Cookie! Who doesn't. But it's nice to see even good boy- soft spoken Jamal has his own dark side that comes out for a bit. There is drama/crime even murder. But it's not unreal (unlike a lotta series these days where the main characters - suburban stay at home moms for instance hire the mafia to kill a man just because they didn't like his speech or something)
Even relationships are realistic. They're flawed and twisted at times and quite unpredictable like Andre & Rhonda's marriage which don't really follow set rules of love as the other shows seem to these days.
Having Timbaland on-board obviously means good music and the songs go seamlessly with the plot and act as a refreshing break whenever the episode seems a bit too "soapy". I'm addicted to Jussie's voice.. especially to "Keep your money".
Other awesome moments would be: The guest stars are something to look forward to: Chris Rock (in a serious role! O_o) Timbaland and Pitbull to name a few. The dialogues.. Oh man! The burns and punchlines in some scenes are epic!
Love the actors. Love the characters. Love the music. Love the show.
Verdict: Addictive

More autotune than show itself, script mildly said is weak. Guess the shows target audience is like 13-17 year old (or iq 90), explaining everything at least 5 times. No real depth, originality or "power" in the show, weak script/production is supported by weak acting. Really don't get the hype that this show is getting, can't people see, that the show is built on clichés ?
The main idea of the show is pretty good and with the right people(cast, writing, production) it would have been great.

I like what one guy said: "It seems kind of odd that this almost all black show was created by a gay white man (Danny Strong) who then gets Lee Daniels, a gay black man, to help develop a show full of black stereotypes and maybe even some fabrications?" - siamivi

ITS JUST AWFUL!

I'm not gonna lie, the first episode completely threw me off it was fast paced and all over the place but... I'm glad I convinced myself to try again. Empire isn't just a hip-hop show to me it's about a family they're dysfunctional but they try to have eachothers back. Absolute must watch.

Oooweee that bitch is cray, and I'm into it! We were apprehensive at first, with the constant singing, but by the second half of the pilot, we were hooked. Team Cookie!
