Halt and Catch Fire Reviews & Ratings

60 minutes

Halt and Catch Fire is set roughly one year after IBM all but corners the market with the release of its first major product – the IBM PC. In this fictional drama, a former IBM executive, Joe MacMillan (Lee Pace) plans to reverse engineer the flagship product of his former employer and forces his current company, Cardiff Electric, into the personal computer race. MacMillan enlists the help of Gordon Clark (Scoot McNairy), a once great engineer who dreams of creating a revolutionary product while trying to manage his initially unsupportive wife Donna (Kerry Bishé), and Cameron Howe (Mackenzie Davis), a volatile prodigy who puts her future in jeopardy to join MacMillan's rogue PC project. Halt and Catch Fire thrives on the spirit of innovation and explores what it's like to stand at the forefront of something world-changing and work towards it, no matter the risk.

I’m really pleased this is being renewed. This was my era when I first got involved with computers and the production of Halt and Catch Fire captures the atmosphere surrounding the computing industry exactly as I remember it. Cutthroat, promiscuous, arrogant, misogynist – these were the things that made that era the way it was. I can’t say that everything was comfortable or that it was right the way things were back then, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was a very hedonistic atmosphere. I’m looking forward to seeing where they go with the characters and the storyline in season 2.

I am a computer scientist and I found the series refreshing in the way it viewed engineering. It is rarely the case that media portrays hacking in its unfabulous way that it is (yes, reverse engineering the IBM computer can count as hacking). So the story veers to the business side of the tech industry when it wants excitement and that's all right. The politics of it are fabulous.

Oh, did I mention the actors and how great they are. And Lee Pace? Especially Lee Pace. Very much LEE PACE!!!! (I guess you figured out why I actually picked up the series....)

[PS: I have only seen the first episode as work and university (exams) had to take precedence]

I like it and I think it's ridiculous. The characters drives are odd and weird at moments, and some of the drama seems very contrived. The characters are hard to believe. The setting is right even the color scheme an the feel of the 80's, though i think as a nostalgia piece Americans does it better. Having lived in Poughkeepsie next to big blue i found this series pretty underwhelming.

** I gave up watching Season 2 Episode 9, the characters and the story just no longer hold my interest **

Halt and Catch Fire burns brightly, incinerating your notions of what a period drama should be. The show's impressive visual style and stylish storytelling continue AMC's legacy of unique dramas. 100% worth watching!

Lee Pace doing-the-do with all of the humans.
Lee Pace as a paternal figure.
Lee Pace aggressively insubordinate.
Lee Pace a soft little sad bunny.
Lee Pace.

Cast and crew are brilliant, well executed much respect for all.

I've really enjoyed see this blast from our recent past. It's well done. Learning about the old computers has been great.

I was alive during this period. I enjoy this series!!!Even though this series is a "docu-drama" I'm happy to learn how personal computers became common household appliances. Cameron's character is hot!! Keep up the good work!!
