Hot in Cleveland – Recap & Review – The Sex That Got Away

Welcome to July, everyone! Before I get into today’s Recap & Review, I wanted to take a moment to say Congratulations to the whole Hot in Cleveland family for getting picked up by TVLand for a second season! They will pick up production in September and the new season will begin airing in January of 2011. And I will be right here with you to talk about each episode. Now, on to last night’s episode. We, as usual, find our friends having breakfast and discussing how they are changing while they’re aging. Melanie rushes in with the newspaper and showed the other girls that her favorite singer will be in town at the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame party that weekend. Victoria grabs the paper and sees that her ex-boy toy, Johnny Revere, is going to be there. She wants to go to the party to confront him about how he treated her and she planned on throwing a drink in his face. So the ladies decide to crash the party. READ MORE...

Hot in Cleveland – Recap & Review – Good Neighbors

Hello, Newman!! In this episode, we meet some of the girl’s neighbors. The featured neighbor is Rick, a newspaper columnist who writes community stories about Cleveland. He is played by Seinfeld alum, Wayne Knight. I’m telling you, whoever does the casting for this show deserves an Emmy immediately!! Also, for anyone who has missed past episodes or just wants to watch them again, TV Land is running a marathon tomorrow, Saturday July 17th, beginning at 2:30 PM EST. Check your local listings to be sure. Our show opens, as usual, in the kitchen, where Joy and Victoria are eating breakfast. Melanie comes in with the mail and has just met a few of the neighbors. She invited them to an impromptu party that night. She hands a package to Victoria and it’s from a Japanese company that wants her to do a commercial for them. The company is Beneficial Dryness Force. The product is pants with incontinent padding built in. Basically a pants diaper. The girls tease her mercilessly. Then Elka walks in with bright, bright candy apple red hair. Joy calls her "little orphan granny". She explains that Max has invited her to the Senior Senior Prom at his center and she needs to compete with one of the other women named Agnes Bratford or as Elka calls her, "Hagness Fatford". The other girls start to tease her a little until she says, "Raise your hand if you have a boyfriend!" Of course, she’s the only one. READ MORE...

Hot in Cleveland – Recap & Review – Meet the Parents

Welcome to another in Cleveland! This week we get to meet our ladies parents, much to their chagrin. We have three great guest stars. Victoria’s father is a renowned stage actor named Alex and is played by Hal Linden. Melanie’s mother is an overprotective housewife named Loretta. She is played by the great Shirley Knight. Finally, we have Joy’s mom, Phillipa. I was most excited to see her because she’s played by Juliet Mills. Juliet last was seen playing Tabitha, the reformed witch turned human from Passions. Best soap ever, in my opinion. But I digress. Back to the episode! READ MORE...

Hot in Cleveland – Recap & Review – It’s Not That Complicated!

Time for another great episode of Hot In Cleveland. I can’t believe there are only three more episodes before the show is back in January. The summer has gone so fast! I am just so tickled pink that the show is doing so well. People are talking about it everywhere. On Facebook there are fan pages and a lot of people are tweeting about it. And I get to write about it every week! Let’s get started on "It’s Not That Complicated!" The girls are gathered to say goodbye to Melanie, who is off to see her daughter in a play. Victoria calls to her that her taxi is here. Melanie stumbles on the steps and says,"Puppy tails!" Victoria teases her for being a potty mouth. Immediately after Mel leaves, Tim Conway shows up at the door. READ MORE...

Hot in Cleveland – Recap & Review – The Play’s The Thing

Ba, ba, ba, baba. Another week in Cleveland with our gals. This week we get to see the wonderful Mark Indelicato guest star as a high school student. We know Mark mostly from his work on Ugly Betty as Justin Suarez. I am so excited to see him again so soon. Our story begins this week with lovely Victoria. She is about to apply Crisco to her face with a piece of bagel when Joy stops her. Vic is going through make-up withdrawal. She has purchased some oil from an endangered Redwood tree, but it hasn’t arrived yet. Elka enters, dressed head to toe in black. Joy asks her is she’s gone Goth, but Elka explains that a friend of hers crashes funerals for men and she’s accompanying her. The girls ask about Max and Betty replies with probably THE line of the show, "Just because I’m chained to the fence doesn’t mean I can’t bark at the cars!" The line gets a huge, live audience reaction. READ MORE...

Hot in Cleveland – Recap & Review – Good Luck Faking The Goiter

Did you know that Cleveland used to be spelled Cleaveland? I didn’t either, but Melanie sure does. On this week’s episode we have guest star, Joe Jonas and a goiter! This episode belongs to Wendie Malick. She is brilliant with her physical comedy chops and really got to stretch her legs with this one. Let’s not waste any more time. On with the show! Elka, Melanie and Victoria are all sitting in the bar. Joy is visiting LA because she had a job doing Brad Pitt’s eyebrows. Victoria is watching the Daytime Emmy nominations on her phone. She gets nominated with Susan Lucci (who guests next week) and another actress who just died. She assumes the dead girl is going to have the advantage. They order champagne to be added to their orange juice because it’s 8am. Melanie browses a Cleveland guidebook because her son is coming to visit and she wants to show him the city. She tries to tell the Cleveland with an A story, but Joy gets back just in time. She shares with the girls that she’s sick of making rich people more beautiful and wonders if there’s something more out there for her. Melanie suggests therapy and says it sounds like a midlife crisis. Of course, Elka has to add, "Midlife, ha!" READ MORE...

Hot in Cleveland – Recap & Review – Tornado

There’s a storm coming to Cleveland! It’s time for our season finale, and I’m very pleased with the episode, but sad to see the show go. Thank goodness it will be back in four months. I watched this one twice to be sure I got every detail down. Let’s start at the top! Joy and Melanie are standing in the wind trying to get into the storm cellar, but Elka won’t let them in. Victoria comes around the corner. Her plane couldn’t take off for the Emmys because of the storm. Joy thinks that Elka won’t let them in because the cellar must be where she grows her pot. Elka finally let’s them in, but says, "You’d better be cool!" They all stumble in and can’t believe their eyes! And…theme song. Babababa! READ MORE...

Hot in Cleveland – Recap & Review – Birthdates

This episode is by far the most bawdy and hilarious we have had so far! The chemistry between our four ladies is really starting to show. It’s not just the characters either; it comes through from the actresses. To start the show, we hear a siren and Elka gets up and says that she isn’t there. Melanie asks her what the police would want with her. As the siren fades in the distance, Elka looks at her innocently and says, "What police?" Ha! Already off to a great start. The LA three, as I will refer to them now, reveal that it’s their shared birthday. They celebrate together on a random day so that they don’t have to remember how old they really are. Elka suggests that they pick each other dates for their gifts this year. She agrees to play too. Melanie will set up Elka, Joy will set up Melanie, Elka will set up Victoria, and much to Joy’s chagrin, Victoria will set her up. She complains that Victoria gives crappy gifts and she’s going to get shafted. Victoria takes offense and shows off the Cartier watch she just gifted herself. Joy is skeptical. I am too!! Hot In Cleveland – Recap & Review – Who’s Your Mama?

After seeing last week’s episode and the ratings that resulted, I really hoped the show would continue to hold up it’s quality. It did even better. Oftentimes shows will change dramatically between their pilots and their second showings. But my ladies avoided that fate and improved as they left the gate. I love the simple opening theme of the show. It’s very brief and it reminds me of the 80’s. The episode picked up the next morning after the pilot. Joy, Victoria and Elka all gathered in the kitchen to compare who had gotten the most phone numbers at the bar the night before. Elka ended up with the most with three. Melanie came in the front door excited because someone had said, "Hi-ya…with the ‘ya'" to her on the street. Joy and Victoria are both shell-shocked from being away from L.A., but Melanie is becoming more enchanted with Cleveland and concludes that she might sell her house in California and stay in Ohio. I think I would too. L.A. would be nice to visit, but way too hectic for this small town gal! READ MORE...

Hot In Cleveland – Recap & Review – Pilot

When I heard that Betty White was going to be on a new sitcom; I knew I had to watch it. The show is on Wednesday nights at 10 PM on TVLand. I was a bit wary of a TVLand original measuring up to the star’s talents, but I was happily proven wrong. The show opened up on a shot of a plane flying over a sunset, which I am assuming was a slight nod to the opening sequence of Golden Girls. A girl can dream. Anybody agree with me? Aboard the plane we meet our main stars. We have Joy, played by Jane Leeves, who calls herself the "eyebrow queen of Hollywood" while name-dropping such clients as Oprah and Ryan Seacrest.
