Kamisama Dolls Episode #13 Anime Review

With the end of Kamisama Dolls, we have a show that wants to again show that it plays hard and cruel and that’s a welcome thing. So many series play it safe and simple that a show like this can be viewed as brutal and disturbing because of how it treats its cast of characters. After the unsavory treatment of Hibino in the previous episode and another cast member gunned down not far from here, Mahiru’s craziness seemed to go even further after that which has resulted in the two main Kakashi involved right now to go crazy as they attack each other. The opening gives us a rather bloody and violent piece, brief but spot on, that results in limbs being torn, a fair amount of blood and Kyohei put on the outs because of the damage he’s taken which has landed him in the hospital. Kamisama Dolls Episode #12 Anime Review

The last episode took a strangely dark turn, more so than we’ve seen in the past, with the kidnapping of Hibino by Mahiru. She’s off her rocker just a bit with how she wants to protect Kyohei, but the whole thing turned into a sexually abuse Mahiru event. Mahiru’s mad glee as she fondled and manhandled her was quite strange to see in the series even if it makes sense in a way with how she is. And admittedly, Hibino certainly has her appeal in this arena. With this episode, having her being manhandled again by Hirashiro who himself has gone off his rocker with his kidnappings, it just gets downright creepy. Again, even if it makes sense. All that ends up saving her from real doom is the arrival of Kuuko, who has set Aki free, and then goes to rescue Hibino. And even she can’t resist at least giving Hibino a good look over as she’s tied down to the bed. READ MORE...

Kamisama Dolls Episode #11 Anime Review

Bringing Mahiru into play in the previous episode is a bit questionable, especially considering how short the series is overall, and it sort of makes her the main focus as we get towards the end here. What the episode did was make clear who she is but also gave us some really good flashback material that showed us how Kyohei, Aki and Mahiru all were several years ago and the things that happened that changed each of them in very different ways. Seeing just how violent Kyohei was during this instance, which is made even starker here, is definitely a pivotal point in his life and explains a lot about why he left and how he’s changed since then. Some things just do things to you on the inside that you can’t deal with in a normal way thereafter. READ MORE...

Kamisama Dolls Episode #10 Anime Review

Kamisama Dolls’ adaptation of the manga continues and does put in some worrying concerns about the season ending on a good note in a complete way, or at least to a certain conclusion, since there’s always a chance there won’t be more. With this episode, we get the full on introduction of Mahiru, another Seki like Utao who adds some confusion to the mix as she’s a very outgoing young woman that’s like a slightly older version of Utao but a bit more aware of the world. And that awareness comes in the form of Mahiru being beholden to Kyohei and wanting nothing but him. And to make matters worse, she has a bit of a persecution complex and acts out on it rather easily, such as when she calls in her doll to make a point. READ MORE...

Kamisama Dolls Episode #09 Anime Review

With life getting back to normal in the city, things are settled for the most part but there’s still some underlying tension. With the length it took to get back, things are still weighing on peoples minds with what’s happened. Utao in particular has had a lot to grapple with, being scolded a fair bit for her actions as well as getting a bit more of a look at what her family history is when it comes to the surprising revelation about her brother. Overall, she handled it well as someone that age should since the larger consequences tend to not come to mind, but her brother is very much in the back of her mind now. READ MORE...

Kamisama Dolls Episode #08 Anime Review

After the last couple of episodes with the trip back home and the exploration especially in the previous episode about Aki’s past, it’s time to get everyone back on track and into the city. It’s kind of amusing how easily Hibino fit into things, even shocking Kyohei a bit with the fact that she kept up with his mother’s heavy drinking. While there have been tense moments and issues to be had for both Kyohei and Utao, Hibino has largely had a decent time though you can see she’s happy to be on the move again to head home. What they have planned before it though is a trip to the beach, which doesn’t go well after arriving there as a pretty big storm hits and it keeps them trapped inside without power for part of it. Kamisama Dolls Episode #07 Anime Review

Kamisama Dolls thankfully goes to spend some time in the past to give us a look at some of the foundation of events that have caused what’s happening in the present. While it doesn’t show us a hugely younger cast of characters, it goes back a few years to show us how Aki and Kyohei are sort of friends that don’t exactly get along hugely well and there are some resentments there. A good part of it comes from how Aki is being bullied by others within the village because of his position and the fact that he’s not a true blood like the others and that’s factoring into it. When you see someone else getting something that you think you deserve, you lash out in all sorts of ways. And when the person you lash out at is very cool and confident, it just incites you even more. READ MORE...

Kamisama Dolls Episode #06 Anime Review

With the trio having returned to the very secluded village and settling in to some degree, including a very amusing seen involving who has to pay for what when it comes to drinks, things continue to play to a more mellow nature here as the work on Utao’s Kakashi. While she made some bad choices when she was in the city and how she handled dealing with those that came after Aki, Kyohei himself is getting the brunt of the blame from his father because he abandoned the ways of the village to find his own path. It’s not a surprising avenue to be taken by him, nor is Kyohei’s reactions, and it says a lot about their relationship in general and some of the background issues that both men have with each other. And those can be hard to impossible to shake off over the course of ones life. READ MORE...

Kamisama Dolls Episode #05 Anime Review

With the mix of people now in the city to deal with Aki while also keeping an eye on what Utao and Kyohei are up to, things are getting out of control. The arrival of an unknown young man that looks a whole lot like Utao and calls Kyohei his brother only adds to the mystery, but it’s one that doesn’t get to be dealt with right away as they both use their weapons of choice against each other in a pitched battle in the streets. It’s all so public that you have to wonder how they’ll cover this up, but I do like that Utao and the others do manage to escape and run off, tired and grimy, from the events that they’ve faced so far. While Utao has some skills, she’s not a seasoned combat veteran by any stretch and is still learning to master Kukuri. READ MORE...

Kamisama Dolls Episode #04 Anime Review

With the introduction of Koushiro in the last episode, the fight against Aki got stepped up a few level as he’s definitely a solid attack dog, but not of the rabid variety. He brings an older sensibility about things since he’s not a high school punk or even a college kid, but someone who has lived a bit and is ready to handle what’s out there. Of course, he doesn’t get it all done quickly or easily as he gets things underway with Aki, but it does show us something a little different than it could have been if it had been just Kyohei and Aki going against each other. There’s a really good sense of choreography with the fight in the opening here as they go at it, avoiding it being drawn out and just going for a short but strong piece. READ MORE...
