Magica Wars Episode #26 Anime Review (Season Finale)

With the bigger action sequences in the last couple of episodes as we dealt with a corrupted magical girl, the series finale for Magica Wars goes in an epilogue direction. That’s not entirely unexpected as it needed to end on a lighter note and a little more uplifting in a way than some of the heavier material of the last arc. Spending its four minutes by going through the various girls in their locales and showing what they’re doing with their days, with a connective falling star across the sky, certainly works nicely provide something that has them all watching the same moment. Not surprising is that the falling star is actually another magical girl that has fallen to the lands, naked of course, and is preparing to set up shop as a kind of ancient spirit that has surfaced once again. And with a mission of slaying the gods at that. READ MORE...

Magica Wars Episode #25 Anime Review

Events took some interesting turns in the last couple of episodes with the multi-character arc as we so the corruption of a magical girl which has led to the fight that Konoe is involved in now. Keeping Azuki involved is a welcome change of pace as Konoe works to deal with what’s going on and Azuki helps to stop what she can when it comes to the destruction of the ley lines. It sets a large battle to be sure with the scale of corruption involved and just how much the ley line helps to power her. Rei has definitely been a fun character to watch, something more engaging than the magatsuhi that we’ve dealt with, as there’s a nice emotional connection and element there to work with. Of course, there are no real surprises here as redemption and hope are key t magical girls, so seeing Rei saved is expected, though well done. READ MORE...

Magica Wars Episode #24 Anime Review

With some fun and well choreographed stories in previous episodes, the series takes us to a new place where we see our lead character of Rei for the arc engage in battle as she’s likely done before. Unfortunately, in her attempts to deal with the evil that’s out there, she ended up with some collateral damage that hurt civilians. And that instance has in turn tainted her with how she’s handled things over the years, causing her familiar Libby to turn with her. All of that leads us back into the present as we see her going up against Konoe, showing us how she went from a good magical girl to what she is now. A little back story is welcome and it’s nicely handled here to nudge events forward overall while reminding of the dangers of being a magical girl. READ MORE...

Magica Wars Episode #23 Anime Review

Now that Azuki has gotten a firsthand look at what’s going on after being drawn into events with a powerful Magatsuhi, she’s gotten to see Konoe at work and it’s definitely fun to watch since there’s a lot of power there. The Magatsuhi at hand is definitely quite powerful though and we get a really good action sequence to get this episode going. With events settling down a bit here halfway through, we get a little time for Azuki to get to know Konoe, especially since she can see the guardian that works with Konoe, and a little background is filled in on Konoe and her history, which fleshes things out a bit here while also talking about the magical girl enemy that they’re now facing as well. Magica Wars Episode #22 Anime Review

The dynamic of this arc has already been intriguing with Azuki serving as a resident monster hunter and being surprised by Konoe and what she is as a magical girl. Azuki’s getting called in for a new job, this time by the police, to check out a bloody crime scene where things went horribly wrong. The house they visit is a bloody mess but there’s hints that Konoe may have been there, which gets her even more interested. But dark magics are afoot and Azuki gets attacked by a paper crane, though nobody else saw it. That continues to make her more receptive to what’s out there and will help in her investigation. Which is useful since she finds herself being drawn further in as time goes on and the magic of paper cranes is explored. This puts her up close and personal with a Magatsuhi with some great mood and atmosphere about it, while also thrusting Konoe in the middle. READ MORE...

Magica Wars Episode #21 Anime Review

Kicking off a new arc and a new character, Magica Wars gives us a touch of action from the start as we meet Konoe Mebuki of the Kyoto Metropolitan Area, the latest prefecture for the show. The show shifts us elsewhere after the credits though as we meet Mizuki, the resident monster specialist doing her best to deal with the creatures that are causing small disruptions around the city. Sadly, she’s not all that good at it, but she tries with all her might. She has a lot to contend with since they can’t let the ley line be broken as that would be disastrous, but she doesn’t know that Konoe is out there fighting as well with her fox-like familiar helping out as her guardian. Their paths only lightly cross at the end here as both are moving towards the same investigation, but it works well. READ MORE...

Magica Wars Episode #20 Anime Review

With Renka’s transformations taking up a good chunk of her arc so far, things take on a stage play feel here at the start in a cute way as she goes up against the magatsuhi that’s threatening the area. It actually gives some time to Ekuu to fight against it and reinforce to her what she has to do with some positive messages, but the fun is in watching the fight. Not that it’s much of a fight as Ekuu gets beaten down pretty hard. For Renka, it’s a moment that gets her to really step up to the plate and fight since there’s a bit of history there to deal with and she really does push herself here because of her issues. Things are all dealt with as expected and while there’s a nice emotional push here, it is admittedly all by the numbers. READ MORE...

Magica Wars Episode #19 Anime Review

With Renka and Enkuu’s introduction and transformation last episode, things went quickly and we got what you’d expect from the start of a new arc. Here, the transformation goes once again, taking up about a quarter of the episode before it gets to actual new material. The show gives over to a bit of a chase with the magatsuhi which delves into talking about the leylines of the world and festival chants, which has us questioning the source of a magical girls powers, something that really hasn’t been explored yet. This in turn gives us a little flashback time for Renka as we see her school issues with the way she’s intro training for field and track and how that effort she puts in is viewed badly by others as they think she does it to make them look bad. It’s an element that keeps her on the outside and ties in to the present with being told she doesn’t understand how others feel. READ MORE...

Magica Wars Episode #18 Anime Review

After a lackluster arc for the past few episodes, Magica Wars shifts to the Kumamoto Prefecture where we get to meet Ariake Renka. Renka’s like most of the others in that she already has her partner in Enkuu, a rather cute floating purple dinosaur of sorts with an eternally angry face about him. He’s a little domineering in dealing with Renka, but she’s easily resistant to his attitude. Renka’s problem, as we see, is that she’s the shy and quiet type that hasn’t made friends at school and now finds herself being pushed into it by Enkuu at the festival. But just as that starts, a magatsuhi has arrived and is making the expected threatening moves. Hence, transformation time! And cue end of episode… READ MORE...

Magica Wars Episode #17 Anime Review

Suzuka’s arc has been decent overall so far, though it’s again falling into the weak category for me just from a design perspective and then being all about the motorcycle racing, which doesn’t appeal much to me in either story or visual. Here, we see Suzuka chasing Souta, not realizing the agreement he’s made, and going through quite a few spins and obstacle sbefore she can get to him. Souta’s reasoning certainly works enough for what he wants to do since he doesn’t want to stop racing, but the cost is beyond his understanding. Suzuka has enough reason to do what she can to save him as the sibling relationship is obviously important, and she goes about it well enough, even if it feels cut short and ends with a comical note in that regard.
