Marco Polo Reviews & Ratings

60 minutes

In a world replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, “Marco Polo” is based on the famed explorer’s adventures in Kublai Khan’s court in 13th century China. The show stars Italian newcomer Lorenzo Richelmy as 'Marco.' Best known for her role in The Wachowski’s "Cloud Atlas," the Beijing-born Zhu Zhu plays Marco’s love interest ‘Kokachin.’ Joan Chen ("Twin Peaks") and Benedict Wong ("Prometheus") also star in the show’s eclectic global cast as Empress Chabi and Kublai Khan.

Loved everything about it! For those who say it isn't that historically correct: it's on Netflix, not the History Channel. Has everything a series needs to have, so please let us have more.

This is a good period drama. Great sets, nice costumes, stunning landscapes, solid acting and a good ratio of drama and action. The Chinese, Mongols and other people are portrayed adequatly and believable and the historic struggle between traditions and foreign influences in the Khan Empire is well incorporated into the plot of the series.

Really enjoyed this up to the end and it had one of the worst endings ever. Guess they didn't know they would only have 2 seasons. Wish they had had the chance to wrap it up properly.

LOVED Season One!! Season 2 wasn't perfect, but overall I rate this series w/5 Stars. It's fascinating to see a culture far in the past and far from our view. If you've ever read The Good Earth, a fantastic historical fiction set in China 100's of years ago, this show will feel familiar to you, though. (This centers on Kublai Khan and Mongolia taking over China for a time; the setting of S2 is mainly China). Great show!

A scripted tv show depicting the war between the Mongols and China. Though a LOT of it is pure fiction there are parts that are true to life taken from written accounts. This link here can tell you rights and wrong.. https://www.quora.com/How-historically-and-factually-accurate-is-the-Netflix-drama-Marco-Polo so I wont go into that deeply. As a tv show though this is fantastic, and i cant believe it took TWO years for them to get around to season 2, the sets, costumes, way of life that's seen is fantastic, also the action kung fu scenes are brilliant too. To get this type of top notch kung fu action.. you usually have to watch a Tartan Asia, Shaw Brothers, or Jackie Chan film.

Season 1: 9/10
Season 2: 8/10

Netflix always takes its time to build suspense in their shows. exactly as they did with this one. but at some point towards the middle of season 1 it became so gripping I could not stop watching.
the twisted ways of both courts, the martial arts and the young italian who tries to find his way and survive life at the khan's court.
it is amazing. all the actors play their parts extremely well. they are all a great fit.
we see how marco polo grows with his challenges and how the khan starts loosing grip while alliances change and shift. it is great.
it is also shot in a great way. the fighting scenes, no matter whether one on one martial arts or huge battle scenes with the mongols and chinese, are a feaast to watch.

cannot wait for series 2

This tale is an epic battle to unite a dived China by ways of assassins, brutality, cunning, strategy and loyalty. The characters are very well cast, the storyline keeps you intrigued and the props/costumes are quite beautiful. I recommend the period drama addict to watch this show.
