Maria Holic Alive! Episode #12 Review

The last day of summer vacation is a doubly special day for Kanako as it’s also her birthday, and she really looks forward to celebrating it every year. Leave it to Mariya to mock it easily though as she reads the date as Vegetables Day, which in its own twisted way works pretty well when it comes to Kanako herself. Naturally, Kanako gets mocked with other important days brought out as well which just frustrates the hell out of her, allowing her another moment to act out in a loud and big way. I do have to admit that Kanako is the type that practically begs to be mocked and made fun of in this way because it gets to her so easily and everyone can get in on it easily enough. She’s so responsive to it that you can’t help yourself, even if you feel bad. Which you mostly wouldn’t. READ MORE...

Maria Holic Alive Episode #11 Review

Summer vacation certainly isn’t what Kanako had hoped it’d be since she’s doing all the hard work she has to with the special courses she’s being pushed through. After failing so many of her classes and getting to the point where she’d get booted, she’s now got to really buckle down and that means missing out on all the fun of summer where she could ogle girls in swimsuits, pour lotion on them and enjoy skimpy fun while frolicking with them in attempts to get closer to them. She truly is taking on the male mentality here in a way you don’t see and she packs in some fun moments just in the opening minute of the episode. All of that comes quickly to an end though when her sister arrives, though at least she brings gifts. READ MORE...

Maria Holic Alive! Episode #10 Review

After Kanako’s bout of not being able to talk for an episode, things are back on track for her to some degree, but she’s still suffering. Her main problem at the moment is a lack of sleep that’s being attributed to a curse, which has Father Kanae coming to visit her so that he can administer a proper cure for it. This completely freaks her out since he is a guy after all and he has some unusual methods in mind to cure the ailment. Just his little talk about things that were done in the past according to the New Testament is amusing as it sends Kanako into an even further panic over her predicament. That his best trick is to actually have her count in order to fall asleep is definitely amusing, since it doesn’t work on her but used to have him conked out by the time he reached number five. Maria Holic Alive! Episode #09 Review

Maria Holic Alive had an amusing point at the end of the previous episode where Kanako was essentially put down for awhile by not being allowed to speak. Having that gag return for the start of this episode is spot on as she’s berated for it and has a gag across her mouth with a giant X across it, which is seen throughout the episode. It’s little more than the mask worn when you have a cold, but it looks perfect with her cloudy and dreary atmosphere that hangs around her while everyone else carries on as normal, or like Mariya, they have a sunny and brightly lit background around them to provide contrast. With Kanako having been locked away for awhile, silencing her for an episode is even more amusing justice. READ MORE...

Maria Holic Alive! Episode #08 Review

With summer vacation here, Kanako is all set to head home to see her parents and is curious as to what Mariya will end up doing for it. Her questioning of Mariya leads to a startling revelation though in that the school essentially offers cram courses during the summer and a lot of students take advantage of it since they want to keep their academic edge. Mariya makes it fairly biting with her remarks though about how Kanako must have done really well in order to be able to skip these considering what she went through with the last round of exams and the fact that she made it through the transfer exams at all. Kanako’s emotions are all over the map though at first until she starts dreaming and fantasizing about what a summer at school would be like with limited staff and students. Her perverted nature shines through, as does the way she romanticizes it. READ MORE...

Maria Holic Alive! Episode #07 Review

Having survived her tests and made it through the school year to this point, Kanako is breathing a sigh of relief for but only a moment as an even bigger challenge now lays ahead of her. It’s the summer season and that means summer activities for her and all the other girls that she’s lusting over, including the ever delicious swim meet where there will be all sorts of students that we regularly see and only see in passing that are parading around in their official school swimwear. Kanako’s so excited that it’s a wonder that she’s even conscious while talking about it in her room considering how much blood flows out of her. Of course, this happens on the actual first day of the swim meet as well to the point where she stains the entire pool and the whole thing ends up canceled because of it. Much like many things in her life, it’s over before she knows it. READ MORE...

Maria Holic Alive! Episode #06 Review

There is definitely something fun when certain characters strike out to dominate an episode since it can really appeal to some of the more niche fans within a show. With Maria Holic Alive this week, it opens with Matsurika taking over the show where she talks about Kanako being sent off to study for a week and what that meant for the outside world. Turning it into Matsurika Holic, we get another completely original opening sequence that’s dominate by her, showing off the utter stupidity of Kanako, and replacing many other characters faces with masks of Matsurika herself. It is, to say the least, utterly priceless. They hit all the right notes in insulting Kanako within just two and a half minutes that you realize there will never ever by any way of taking Kanako seriously since we now know fully how everyone else views her. Maria Holic Alive! Episode #05 Review

Sometimes some revelations are just really hard to grapple with when you know someone for so long. For Kanako, she’s long thought of her sister as something of an idiot, whereas she’s prided herself on her own good grades and her acceptance into this academy. Unfortunately, her grades aren’t doing all that good as she’s getting very low scores and is having a hard time understanding why this place is so hard. As she’s informed though, it’s about an average school overall with lots of institutions in the city of a similar level. To make it worse, Kanako has thought that her sister going overseas to the California Institute of Technology was a sign of weakness as she couldn’t get into a proper Japanese university. The exasperation on people’s face is palpable as they try to get it through to her that her sister isn’t exactly an idiot, though Kanako may be. READ MORE...

Maria Holic Alive! Episode #04 Review

Maria Holic Alive definitely takes a lot of the usual kinds of gags from Shaft and works them well into a series that does try to avoid going so completely strange and over the top. Case in point early on here in the midst of a class, we have Kanako shot in the head through the window with an arrow. Of course, it’s a trick arrow that you wear on top of your head, and you can’t imagine how it actually flew through the air, but it works well in highlighting the strange and unusual and puts Kanako into more pain when she ends up with her neck twisted instead by a fellow classmate. With the class learning about the law, things move quickly into a legal realm as the students decide to find out what’s happened themselves as Mariya gets far more serious than you usually see her. Maria+Holic Alive Episode 3 Review

Due to all the impromptu tea-parties in Kanako and Mariya’s room, Kanako has put on weight and can no longer fit into the outfit she had picked out for ‘finding love’. Thus she begins an insanely dangerous dieting regime, helped along by other people’s absurd suggestions, to shed what she had gained. The effects are far more frightening than anyone foresaw, though.
