Miss Monochrome Episode #13 Anime Review

The series comes to a close in a way that obviously works for the simplistic nature of it all as Monochrome is suddenly given a CD debut after some hard work that she’s done has caught a producers eye. The quick montage at the start is very cute as she goes recording and all that and then performance mode on a street corner in an attempt to win over people. And as you can expect, she puts in a great performance even if it doesn’t draw a lot of people to watch her at first. Or rather, at all it seems until she strikes happiness in the heart of a little girl, which truly puts her on the road to being an idol. It’s not the huge finish that one might expect from the series in some ways, but it’s the finish that it deserves as it tugs at the heart nicely, all while throwing in a Christmas miracle as well. Miss Monochrome Episode #12 Anime Review

Having gotten the nod of Miss Monochrome in the Golden Time series last week, it’s amusing to see the side reference that here as it gave her a bit more exposure. With this episode though, we see the return of Mana as she’s just so excited to see Miss Monochrome but Monochrome is all about wanting to know where her money is. Of course, it turns out that Mana has managed to become Kikuko’s manager in the time since the money was stolen and there’s an amusing kind of connection that comes between Kikuko and Monochrome when they formally meet. And Kikuko realizes part of Monochrome’s secret about how she doesn’t age and reveals that she’s the same, which sets the stage for a length battle to compete with each other on the stage some day. That gives Monochrome all the incentive she needs to continue on, which is something that she’s needed after all the recent defeats. READ MORE...

Miss Monochrome Episode #11 Anime Review

Miss Monochrome has done a lot of the things that idols do as a regular thing, but one of the most obvious things that she hasn’t done is to actually audition. That alone certainly makes sense since it could be a game changer, so she ends up going into that gig there, starting with a ramen eating commercial promotion where she has to talk it up as a reporter in a quick and simple way. Not that she can do it right based on the way she is, especially since she’s an android. But one door closing can open and another and it’s cute to see how she ends up doing a dietician gig for a bit since she can cook things without a lot of tools, though without any taste capability it’s pretty useless. While she doesn’t get the gig she wants, it’s good to see how she finds a place where her abilities are well suited and she can succeed with it. Not that she can express an emotion of satisfaction. Miss Monochrome Episode #10 Anime Review

After the series came amusingly full circle in the last episode, it definitely shed some new light on the scale of events here. Not that it really changed anything as we see that Monochrome is still going about her goal of becoming an idol, but at least we have a reason. Here, we get to see her experiencing a bit more of what it means to be an idol as she and Maneo stumble across a handshake event, noting that if there’s a line, a Japanese person will stand in it. Of course, she wants to do the same thing but she handles it in the most awkward of ways by trying to do it at work, walking in the streets and elsewhere, including the bath. It does give her some good face time with people but it also hits some comical notes, such as the way she ends up in a few sporting events because of it. The cameos for that are priceless. Miss Monochrome Episode #09 Anime Review

Miss Monochrome goes for some fun with the aliens again here as we see them invading the world on a human hunt and eliminating the majority of the population, though not all so they can come back in a million or so years to hunt again. This puts Miss Monochrome in an awkward position as she has survived – due to not being really human? – and has managed to connect with Kikuko in an effort to keep her alive. Not that it goes well and we just get a situation where it’s Monochrome waiting for her to be reincarnated for years and years from then on, which is amusing when you get down to it. Providing a comically long life cycle like this that has brought us into the present, the show goes full circle in a way only something like this can be and helps to actually cement why she wants to be a super idol. Miss Monochrome Episode #08 Anime Review

With Miss Monochrome’s journey not really getting her anywhere, it’s little surprise that she’s just wishing her time away while stocking shelves thinking of how she can reach new heights of fame. Her manager has a few ideas for her, though it’s not exactly stuff she can handle right in terms of interactions with others. When she becomes a race queen, she actually wins the race by running due to her robot body. What inspires her after that is Kikuko’s mountain climbing gig that gets a lot of attention and she decides to do the same, though not as an actual reporter or celebrity. While Kikuko does Mt. Fuji, Monochrome does Mt. Takeo which is pretty much a day hike in a leisurely fashion. Her uncertainty as to why she’s not getting interviewed is comical, as is how she decides to top what Kikuko does. READ MORE...

Miss Monochrome Episode #07 Anime Review

Miss Monochrome’s goal of being a super pop idol is one that keeps grabbing at all the wrong things when it comes to figuring out the path. Most of what she does are things that happen after you become an idol and certain aspects follow it, such as the figures and way the fans work. Now she’s wanting to have a magical girl wand of some sort in order to have the right prop, but her manager at least finds a way to make it work by giving her cleaning tools to use to practice. That makes for some practice moments, much as it does when we see her working in the fields later to enhance her ability to do hard, nature-driven work that can help give her more of what she needs in terms of personality and understanding. Miss Monochrome Episode #05 Anime Review

While last week was a little blatant with the whole Nendoroid aspect and its marketing, Miss Monochrome is something that can move past it fairly easily. With her wanting to be an idol, getting involved in such things makes sense, though it didn’t go her way there. Now, she’s all about the cosplay as her sort-of manager has found a two hour special being filmed that involves a lot of cosplay and she can try and get into it. Which leads to a great little montage of different outfits she can potentially wear for it. It ties in well with Halloween since it’s the kind of special and she runs with it well, all while carrying around a pumpkin for a lot of it. What she ends up doing for a costume is priceless though and is it’s entirely her, especially with the voice, as she torments the kids like crazy. She’s got the right idea, but it doesn’t fit the modern world. READ MORE...

Miss Monochrome Episode #04 Anime Review

Miss Monochrome’s attempts at becoming an idol are things that can take unusual but somewhat expected turns based on how it’s all going to work. With the way she interprets what idols are, she realizes that popular idols and people are being adapted into Nendoroid form and she sees that as the ideal path to prove that she is definitely popular and an idol. Of course, you have to be popular to be made into one, so she opts to try and make one herself in a way by coming up with a costume design for herself that will make her popular in the area as part of the business district. The thing she designs is certainly comical and you have to appreciate her efforts, which aren’t top notch, but results in a good twist that makes you grin with how she’s portrayed. READ MORE...

Miss Monochrome Episode #03 Anime Review

Miss Monochrome plays to its strengths in a nice way here as we get Monochrome being all girlish in an android kind of way as she admires a battery, an Evoluta, that she sees in the shop window. Her dream of experiencing a powerful battery like that is given form when her manager spends a few bucks and gives it to her as a present, which doesn’t quite overload her but it does supercharge her. The timing is quite good as at that very moment, the world is about to be invaded by aliens who have come for the first human hunt in millions of years. And her manager is the first target. It goes out with a big bang kind of moment that’s really cute and fun to watch, though of course it’s done in a truncated kind of way owing to the length of the episodes. But it does it really well.
