The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of October 24, 2016

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   Mom (Season Premiere) Thursday at 9 p.m. on CBS Why: CBS is not the place to find TV's freshest comedies. In fact, the network is debuting two more sitcoms this week ( Man With a Plan and The Great Indoors ), and they’re both a bit of a disaster. All of that makes the return of Mom even more important. Yes, it's another Chuck Lorre creation. And it's entering that sometimes-awkward middle-aged portion of a hit show's run. But this is a sitcom that manages to balance humor and heartbreak, joy and despair. Of course, most of the show's success rests on the shoulders of the supremely talented Allison Janney, who's won two of her seven (!) Emmys for this role, and Anna Faris, whose work has earned fewer accolades but is no less impressive. In this season's premiere, both women are focusing on their romantic lives, with Bonnie's relationship with Adam facing a test while Christy learns that Jill is not the ideal wingwoman. ("She vag-blocked me" is the obvious, Lorre-approved quote of the episode.) Prepare to talk about: CBS' new lineup of modern, boundary-pushing comedies (JK); why Faris is so overlooked; Chris Pratt's upcoming role as a charming (obvs) potential love interest for Christy.   Good Girls Revolt (Series Premiere) Friday at 3 a.m. on Amazon Why: Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's less annoying actress-daughter, continues her big TV year (after a noteworthy role on Mr. Robot ) in a period drama inspired by the historic discrimination lawsuit against Newsweek by 46 female staffers. As the magazine was putting together a March 1970 cover story about the feminist movement, the women researchers, long blocked from moving into editor positions, decided to fight back. The story, documented in Lynn Povich's book, is transferred to the fictional News of the Week and played out by a talented cast that includes Anna Camp, Hunter Parrish, Jim Belushi, and Joy Bryant (as civil-rights activist Eleanor Holmes Norton). The women who make up the core group all have standout moments worth looking for. It's a Mad Men -style reminder of how insane the workplace used to be and motivation to keep pushing toward true equality . Prepare to talk about: How scarily relevant the show is thanks to the U.S. presidential election; how many of these women went on to even more incredible things.   Tracey Ullman's Show (Series Premiere) Friday at 11 p.m. on HBO Why: Her comedy may not be as exciting and unexpected as it once was, or as daring and complex as the work of some of TV's new stars, but Tracey Ullman is a dependably funny force making a welcome return to U.S. television (30 years after her FOX series premiered). Already a success on British TV earlier in the year (a second season was filmed this summer), Tracey Ullman's Show expands the chameleonic performer's stable of celebrity impersonations. Her take on Camilla Parker-Bowles is not exactly kind but totally entertaining and her Maggie Smith voice is uncanny, but my favorite is her mischievous Judi Dench, who slashes tires, keys cars, shoplifts, and gets away with it all, because a "national treasure" couldn't possibly be up to no good. Also stupendous is Ullman's Angela Merkel, whose chief struggle is tamping down her natural sexual allure. Ja. Prepare to talk about: How crazy it is that the first Tracy Ullman Show began airing in 1987; how Dame Judi really could get away with anything.   T.J. DeGroat is the editor of SideReel. He also is a national treasure. Follow him on Twitter . div.post p { text-align: justify; }
