New Girl Season 6 Episode 14 Review: “The Hike”

"The Hike" is another interesting Season 6 episode of New Girl. Like so much of this season something feels a little off about it; the installment is a little haphazard and lacking when it comes to story and character moments. I mean, the titular hike of the episode feels like an afterthought, a convenient and occasionally humorous plot device that serves only one function: breaking up Jess and Robby, which could have and should have been done several episodes ago. However, "The Hike" is still a hilarious half hour of New Girl, particularly when it focuses on Schmidt and Cece using their new house to host Winston, Aly, and all of her family members; funny moment after funny moment hits, whether it’s Schmidt describing what would have happened if Cece had hugged the younger version of him or Nick crafting outrageous stories about Winston to impress Aly’s family, and it’s all nicely tied together through the more emotional scenes that happen later in the episode between Winston and Aly. New Girl Season 6 Episode 13 Review: “Cece’s Boys”

Can one scene or sequence make an entire episode of a show suddenly worthwhile? I never would have thought that the answer could be yes, but after watching the "sack waxing" scene in tonight’s New Girl, I might be wrong. There are just some scenes or sequences that are so ridiculously funny, so outrageously entertaining that they make the rest of the installment somehow better, and that scene with the guys at the spa certainly comes close to doing that for "Cece’s Boys," which, overall, is a pretty mediocre episode of New Girl. In theory, "Cece’s Boys" should be a great episode of New Girl, as it pairs up its characters in interesting ways and features plenty of fantastic jokes, from Winston’s fake cat hand at the beginning of the episode to the stupid antics of Donovan and Dean once Cece takes them both on as clients. However, everything comes off as very by-the-numbers, almost formulaic; there’s a lack of energy in most of tonight’s scenes that I can’t fully explain, but anytime the focus shifts from the guys’ spa day to Jess and Reagan’s efforts to recruit new models for Cece, the episode loses something—the jokes aren’t as funny, and the chemistry, that is typically so dynamite every week on New Girl, just isn’t there this week between Zooey Deschanel and Megan Fox. New Girl Season 6 Episode 12 Review: “The Cubicle”

After several weeks of fun but, for the most part, pretty surface-level episodes, this week’s New Girl digs a little deeper into the flaws and insecurities of Jess and Nick as they continue to struggle to make their current romantic relationships work. "The Cubicle" doesn’t fully center on them and their problems (there’s some wonderful material with Cece that I’ll discuss later), but how they come together to deal with these issues provides the episode with its best moments, as the two exes and friends have an open and honest discussion about their own romantic history, giving some solid insight into what’s causing these present relationship troubles and how they can fix them. New Girl Season 6 Episode 10 Review: “Christmas Eve Eve”

When it comes to holiday episodes, New Girl typically knocks it out of the park. I wasn’t a huge fan of this year’s Thanksgiving installment, but then again, I’ve had a lot of problems with many of the show’s episodes from this fall. And maybe it’s the singing at the end of the episode, or the fact that I’m a huge Christmas fanatic, or maybe it’s just because New Girl finally gave us another strong, well-written half hour focusing on the loft-mates and no one else, but I absolutely loved "Christmas Eve Eve." This episode is everything that I want New Girl to be all the time: fun, heartfelt, and hysterical, and it gives us plenty of great, memorable moments with our favorite characters, from Jess to Nick to Schmidt. Plus, we even get a flashback to another classic Winston-and-Cece mess-around. How can you beat that? READ MORE...

New Girl Season 6 Episode 8 Review: “James Wonder”

Throughout its five-plus seasons, New Girl has had quite a bit of fun with its characters and different personas. Whether it’s Jess pretending to be Sam’s date, Katie, or Nick channeling all of his Chicagoan idiosyncrasies into the character of Julius Pepperwood, this sitcom has never shied away from goofy and downright strange alter egos, and it’s provided some of the series’ funniest moments of all-time. Sometimes, New Girl is at its best when it just gets weird and wacky and allows its characters to indulge their craziest antics, and "James Wonder" certainly gives both Winston and Nick plenty of opportunities to be their weirdest and funniest selves, as Winston uses his potential undercover alias, James Wonder, to help Jess try to land the principal position at her school and Nick struggles to find the perfect wedding gift for Cece and Schmidt months after their actual nuptials. New Girl Season 6 Episode 6 Review: “Ready”

Due to the World Series and the 2016 election, it’s been nearly a month since FOX has aired a new episode of New Girl, and I, for one, have missed the loft gang. There’s just something so welcoming and exciting about having a show like New Girl to look forward to every Tuesday night, and especially with the division occurring right now in the United States, I’m incredibly happy to have this fun, goofy show back in my life. And "fun" and "goofy" are the perfect words to describe most of "Ready." Tonight’s half hour is similar to New Girl‘s last new episode, "Jaipur Aviv," which aired back in October; like that installment, it’s pretty light on story and big moments, opting instead for different but dynamic character pairings that allow most of the members of the loft to be their weird, neurotic selves. I mean, this is an episode where Nick spends most of the half hour trying to decide whether or not the new bartender Cece hired is good looking, and where Winston has to constantly reject beautiful women that keep hitting on him because his confidence is just too much for them to handle. It’s totally ridiculous and absolutely wonderful. READ MORE...

New Girl Season 6 Episode 5 Review: “Jaipur Aviv”

Fun is the focus of tonight’s episode of New Girl. "Jaipur Aviv" doesn’t offer a lot of emotional moments or character depth, but the jokes and antics are entertaining enough to keep you smiling and laughing throughout the 30 minutes, even if you know that the show can do better. There’s still some solid character stuff in this episode, with Jess attempting to express her feelings for Nick in a non-romantic way; however, the central story of "Jaipur Aviv" is mainly an excuse for New Girl to be its goofiest self. So what is the main story of "Jaipur Aviv"? Well, even though the majority of the episode takes place at Schmidt and Cece’s new house and features the loft crew stripping down the walls and clearing out various rooms, it’s all just setup for the crux of the half hour: Jess and Nick deciding that Reagan should move back into the loft. The idea is brought up as Jess and Nick discuss their options for what to do with the extra room once Schmidt and Cece move out in six months. Once Jess brings up the fact that they would need another roommate to help them pay rent, Nick suggests Reagan, and they both agree that she makes the most sense, especially since she’s used to the loftmates’ idiosyncrasies and they won’t need to have the "Here’s what you need to know about Winston" conversation with her. New Girl Season 6 Episode 4 Review: “Homecoming”

When FOX first announced that New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine would be crossing over this fall, I expected an hour of the type of wacky and wonderful craziness that both shows excel at, with Winston’s career as a LAPD officer somehow bringing him to New York to work alongside Jake, Amy, and rest of the Nine-Nine gang. However, that’s not at all how tonight’s crossover happened, as Jess only shared one scene with Jake in the Brooklyn Nine-Nine half and only bumped into him because he needed to use her car (which was actually Schmidt’s mom’s car) to chase after a criminal, and aside from one brief scene involving Boyle with Nick and Winston, Jess was the only character from New Girl to interact with anyone from the Nine-Nine. All in all, despite my expectations, both shows delivered relatively simple episodes tonight, with outside characters barely having an impact on the various storylines, aside from Holt helping Jess come to the realization that she has late in "Homecoming." New Girl Season 6 Episode 4 Review: Homecoming

New York, New York! On New Girl Season 6 Episode 4 , Schmidt is being honored by his high school, and the whole gang flies out to New York to celebrate. This installment was enjoyable and hilarious. Placing the roommates in a different city brought out new laughs and situations. Schmidt being back home meant some extra smothering behavior in his mom. And the confrontation between Cece and Louise is every new wife's nightmare. ...Read More...   //www.tvfanatic.com/2016/10/new-girl-season-6-episode-4-review-homecoming/
