Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan Season 2 Episode #13 Anime Review

With the series hitting the halfway mark and ratcheting up the experience, tension and action, that means it’s time to drop in a recap/digest episode. Instead of doing what most shows do at this point by giving us a halfway marker of something interesting and big happening that sets the stage for the second half, we get up to that point and then ask the viewer to journey with us to the past twelve episodes by looking at the story to date and reminding us why we like it so much. These episodes can be good at times for new viewers jumping on and can run well as a special before the big episode itself hits to try and draw people in, but mostly it’s the equivalent of skipping a week like most shows do at one point in their run and just shuffling something else on instead. Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan Season 2 Episode #12 Anime Review

With the way this arc has been going, getting everything to Kyoto at this point has been the big thing. With Rikuo and his crew having arrive now via the Treasure Ship, they’re able to see first hand just how bad things are there with the way the yokai have taken over and the plan to usher in a new order now that the seals are being dealt with. The personal side of it is pretty strong as well since Rikuo wants to get in there to save his friends from school who ended up out there on a field trip of sorts. There’s a fair bit of action in the first half but a lot of it comes across as just posturing more than anything else and the drumbeat for Rikuo to change his plan to save his friends. READ MORE...

Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan Season 2 Episode #11 Anime Review

Everything has been slowly working towards this encounter in Kyoto, with the first instances involving Yura being recalled there by her family. It’s all starting to come together a this point with the Kyoto Yokai making their moves and getting closer to their goal by breaking the final seal. As we’ve seen, they’ve been pretty proactive on their surge with plenty of reason to be that way while taking in all that Kyoto has to offer after all the years away. It’s had some decent moments, but it’s been slowed down by lack of compelling characters and the repeated flashback episodes and focusing on Rikuo getting himself all primed up to get to Kyoto help. His boat ride across the sky has had its moments of amusement, but they’re at least now entering Kyoto airspace. READ MORE...

Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan Season 2 Episode #10 Anime Review

Sometimes what kills me is the way that Viz Media can give such a short premise for the episode and yet be absolutely correct in that it’s what it’s about. We’ve had some lengthy ones before for past episodes where it’s a bit padded, but with this episode, the eight word episode summary covers the vast majority of the episode. It’s just a matter of what kind of fight it is that ensues as Ryuji goes against Akifusa at first and does his best to take him down, only to be stymied by events, and then to have Yura arrive on the scene to do her part as well as she’s getting pretty upset by things. While they’re struggling, it’s not an easy run for Akifusa either as the body he’s using is getting weaker and can handle only so much action before it’ll be useless. READ MORE...

Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan Season 2 Episode #09 Anime Review

With all the effort that Rikuo has put into his training, things have progressed well even if the majority of it has been off camera. The focus on the past and the ties to the present has been the main thing but it’s been going on over the last few episodes as Rikuo needed to accomplish certain things in order to be able to go to Kyoto on his grandfathers permission. Once he got that though, suitably impressing the man, Rikuo and the others are given a massive floating yokai ship that they can use to make their journey much more enjoyable. It’s not a pleasure ship or anything, but it’s certainly something that impresses even the most jaded of yokai. Of course, in getting to Kyoto, Rikuo’s classmates have already arrived there and are going through their pursuit of the supernatural through the historical sites in comedic fashion. READ MORE...

Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan Season 2 Episode #08 Anime Review

While the series picks up some steam here and there, only to lose it quickly not long afterward, this episode provides a brief moment or two of Rikuo in the first half as he starts to get serious about his training with the crew that he’s with now. After that, it’s all about introducion the various members that are heading out to deal with the seals. It’s such a parade of characters, names and temples and seals that it’s just overwhelming within the first half of the episode. Nobody really stands out and I’m hard pressed to say that any of them really merit a second look at that either. It’s not done as a deluge of information, but there’s just so many and you know they’re going to meet various ends once going against Rikuo and his group that it’s hard to get all that attached or interested in any of them. Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan Season 2 Episode #07 Anime Review

With the somewhat up and down nature of the season so far, having an episode where things are fairly relaxed is definitely useful. With Rikuo assuming the Nura form more and more often, it’s getting to the point where it’s no longer really useful to talk about them separately as we had but rather just going with Rikuo now as he’s properly bonded and blended with Nura. The past that we’ve seen for Nura definitely helped to show just how he’s changed and evolved over the yeras to where he is now, but at this stage it’s all about moving forward with what’s going on in the present with Rikuo having made his change in mindset to be the Third Heir and to follow through on that commitment. Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan Season 2 Episode #06 Anime Review

Shifting back to the present with Yura in Kyoto having come back because of the problems caused by her brother at the start of the series, Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan gets back to dealing with things in a proper manner. While the flashback episodes weren’t horrible, they slowed down the start of the series in an awkward way. The plus to it was that we got to see a different side of Nura from the past when he was a bit more outgoing and in control in a way that he’s not when it comes to his bond with Rikuo. That aspect was fun, as was his ladykiller ways, but the piece as a whole ejected the bulk of the cast for a few episodes and that killed the forward momentum of the show. READ MORE...

Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan Season 2 Episode #05 Anime Review

With the previous episode showing us a time awhile ago when Nura roamed the streets and the night introduced us to Princess Yo, a young woman who can heal seemingly any wound. Though that’s certainly an appeal. Nura seemed like he fell for her for who she is instead, though it’s hard not only for her to understand but everyone else as well. With her being whisked away before, Nura must now invade Osaka Castle in order to get her back. Of course, within the castle walls there are plenty of yokai that use the women there for their own purposes. With all of them containing powers of one kind or another, it’s clear there are larger plans going on here. READ MORE...

Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan Season 2 Episode #04 Anime Review

The fourth episode of the series takes a curious turn as it goes back in time by a fair bit to show the old days when the Toyotomi clan were the ones in power over Japan. There’s a great deal of intrigue and the like that’s evident there as we see conniving and planning going on, but the real focus is on two people in particular. One is a beautiful young woman named Princess Yo who has a very special skill in being able to heal people. That’s obviously a threat to some degree, but the one that’s more of an issue is Nura himself as he and his band easily roam the lands causing trouble and doing what they’ve done for ages. When Nura gets wind of Yo, he ends up heading off to see her and in on level to just play with her. READ MORE...
