Starz's Outlander Casts Its Lead Claire

  Irish actress Caitriona Balfe has been cast in the lead role of Starz's upcoming drama Outlander , the network announced on Wednesday. Based on a seven-book series by Diana Gabaldon,   Outlander  follows the story of Claire Randall (Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743. The Starz adaptation of the "Outlander" novels has found its Claire.Irish actress Caitriona Balfe will play the part in the show, which comes from "Battlestar Galactica" executive producer Ron Moore and is based on Diana Gabaldon's novels. She joins a cast that includes Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Duncan Lacroix, Annette Badland and Stephen Walters."The casting of Claire Randall was a long and difficult one because the role is so crucial to the success of our show," Moore says. "'Outlander' is told from Claire's point of view and we experience the entire story through her eyes, so it was vital that we find exactly the right actor to play her. The cast of “Outlander” continues to grow with the addition of Duncan LaCroix in the role of Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser. Author Diana Gabaldon, whose bestselling books provide the basis of the series, broke the casting news on Twitter. 'Game of Thrones' star Tobias Menzies lands 'Outlander' dual role

Tobias Menzies is moving from one beloved fantasy franchise to another. After starring as Edmure Tully in "Game of Thrones," Menzies has landed a dual role in Starz's upcoming "Outlander" adaptation. Starz announced in a press release that Menzies will play both Frank Randall, the 20th century husband of main character Claire Randall, and his 18th century ancestor English Army captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall. This will give Menzies a chance to stretch his acting muscles, as Frank is a good-hearted character while Black Jack is described as a "dark, violent man." Don't consider Menzies' role in "Outlander" to mean he's out of "Game of Thrones." Edmure was one of the few characters who wasn't killed off during the Red Wedding, and though he's likely being held captive by Walder Frey, chances are we'll see him again.
