Polar Bear Cafe Episode #50 Anime Review

Polar Bear Cafe comes to a close with this episode and a series like this is one that’s kind of hard to close down in a particular way. With the series being so focused on smaller stories that often don’t even carry through an entire episode, doing something bigger would feel out of place. Which is why it’s just good fun in the first half as we watch the main characters just enjoying their time in the cafe and going through some of the usual puns, gags and silliness. But it does all start to take a slightly different turn as it progresses as Panda decides that he’s going to find out what’s going on with Penguin these days as he’s acting just a touch odd. Polar Bear Cafe Episode #49 Anime Review

It’s hard to believe there’s only one more episode left after this, but at least this time around we get a callback to one of my favorite characters. While Grizzly has had some involvement in this past season while he’s been hibernating, he hasn’t been as involved as usual. Not that Polar Bear doesn’t do his best to keep him in the loop as he calls him using fake voices and names to get him to do survey’s and the like. Polar Bear just likes messing with him and we get to see a few instances of that here, including some home visits that just don’t go well in Grizzly’s mind. Of course, the reality isn’t what he expects as he throws open the door and finds his mother there. READ MORE...

Polar Bear Cafe Episode #48 Anime Review

With a mixed episode previously, especially because of its focus on the whole coffee squirrels and apprentice stuff that is absolutely the weakest part of the series for me, Polar Bear’s Cafe inches a bit closer to its conclusion here in a way that’s rather appropriate. Bringing Sloth into the picture, everything can move down to a crawl for a little bit with him. We’ve had some cute episodes with him in the past, especially when we got to see just how much Sasako does to help him out and make his life a little less stressful, so seeing some new material with him is definitely a pleasure. Polar Bear Cafe Episode #47 Anime Review

It may be bad to say, but I’m reaching the point where I’m glad the show is ending soon. I enjoy Polar Bear Cafe a whole lot, and it still does some great episodes, but it’s becoming something that’s a little too familiar at this point. It’s the kind of series where I’d love to see a single new season once a year in order to revisit the group and enjoy their exploits. Right now it just feels like we’re in marathon mode where it’s just going on and on, and as much as we enjoy it, it’s starting to wear just a little thin and you start to look for the light at the end of the tunnel. But then you get Polar Bear wearing a Darth Vader mask and you can’t help but to laugh out loud. READ MORE...

Polar Bear Cafe Episode #46 Anime Review

As we get closer and closer to the end of the series, there’s that sense of unease that permeates things as you know time with this cast of characters won’t go on for much longer. So you do start to hope to see more of those that made an impact over time on you or ones that were just too cute for words. While I’m hoping for more Grizzly sequences before the doors close on the show for a bit, I’m also glad to see that in this episode we get some with the baby penguins who are just beyond words. Having them arrive in the cafe for the Doll Festival with some cute boxes and a whole red/orange carpet event for it is just far too cute for words. READ MORE...

Polar Bear Cafe Episode #45 Anime Review

Polar Bear Cafe has done some sweet and some sad episodes over its run, but the show really did a number on its fans in the previous episode. Seeing Panda go through the pain of losing a friend who had transferred to another zoo, this one being in Singapore, gave us some new insight into the character While we knew that Panda is definitely filled with feelings and emotions, it’s mostly been about food and sleep and not much more. So seeing him really having to deal with things and to run through the emotions was really nicely done, as hard as it was to watch at times. But that’s been done and dealt with and now the show has to advance the Panda storyline just a bit more. READ MORE...

Polar Bear Cafe Episode #44 Anime Review

While to most people who go to zoos it seems like things never change, there are always some things that happen that aren’t all that obvious. In a way, there’s a lot to like about the familiarity of a zoo when you go every few years or even less where the same things are generally there and you can see the enjoyment in kids eyes over seeing them. Such is the case here at the start where we see how the pandas are doing their service for the crowd and having fun with it, and the kids as well. Unfortunately, as we’ve seen before, the life of a part time or full time panda at the zoo doesn’t pay the bills, so Full Time Panda continues to do side job work. READ MORE...

Polar Bear Cafe Episode #43 Anime Review

As the season continues on, I find myself growing more and more concerned about poor Grizzly. I’ve liked him from the start when he debuted here, but with him in his hibernation period, it’s definitely getting to be hard to not feel for him even more. Every time he gets close to getting some real sleep, something comes up that causes him to lose out on it. It’s unfortunate for him but I absolutely love the way he just gets so frustrated by it all and takes it out on Polar Bear, who is often the one who does him in. Even worse, Grizzly is getting more and more used to this so there’s a chance he’s just going to be cranky all year round at this point. READ MORE...

Polar Bear Cafe Episode #42 Anime Review

One of the more interesting underlying aspects to the series is that while everyone has problems of one kind or another over the course of it so far, Polar Bear has largely been free of them. His cafe does decently enough, he’s got a good stable of friends that he does things with and he’s almost always vastly entertained either by the things going on around him or his own sense of humor. With his puns and general wordplay, he’s always making himself laugh on the inside (though perhaps it’s a desperate cry for help) and that always allows him to look like he’s without worries. That changes a little bit here in the first half of the episode as Polar Bear is suffering from insomnia. READ MORE...

Polar Bear Cafe Episode #41 Anime Review

Because of the nature of the series, it’s often best to not ask what some of these characters do when they’re not at the cafe. Sometimes the question is answered and we learn things like how Penguin is mistakenly seeing a dozen different female penguins without realizing it. Panda is probably just sleeping somewhere at home and being a bother. And those like Sloth are just trying to get by. And frankly, as much as I like Polar Bear, he continues to be a character that I suspect has some deep, deep evil within him and he gets it out off screen somewhere. READ MORE...
