Review of Powers

60 minutes

Powers, an edgy dramatic series, follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who are assigned to investigate cases involving people with superhuman abilities, referred to as “Powers.” Set amidst today’s paparazzi culture, Powers asks the questions, what if the world was full of superheroes who aren’t actually heroic at all? What if all that power was just one more excuse for mischief, mayhem, murder, and endorsement deals?

There is a lot of after school special level acting taking place here, and a kind of visual and scene flatness that makes the show hard to not to roll your eyes at sometimes. Yet the overall exploration of the concept of a society of people with and without powers and how that shapes their potential psychological and social lives remains compelling for those of us who are die hard fans of the comix/marvel/Heroes genre. overall, however this unoverse is still too flat and superficial and staid to make me get behind it.
